A form of moist Swedish tobacco known as snus has been linked to premature death in users, a new longitudinal study has found.

The study examined the use of snus in the Swedish municipalities of Enkoping and Habo during a 30-year period, along with residents' use of other tobacco products and alcohol.

Inhabitants' mouths were examined prior to the study and its final results indicated that snus users were more likely to have mouth and throat cancers than non-snus users, the news agency said.

Dr. Ann Roosaar at the Odontological Institute said the study found snus -- it rhymes with moose -- posed a significant health risk to those who used it even when compared to normal tobacco, the Swedish news agency TT reported Saturday





This -- rhymes with "smasmorshion" -- of an article is contesting what we say here on Snuson that there is no mouth cancer etc. Snus afficianado's are they lying or are we wrong?

They said "use of other tobacco products" which would increase the chances of getting cancer. Other than that anything you do is considered a health risk these days. Breathing the very air we need to stay alive is harmful to us. I do believe that it is much healthier to snus than to lite up a cigarette, but I do accept that snusing comes with risks but I am willing to take the chance in order to breathe. Also, I do believe that your body chemistry has a little play in the forming of cancer, but I could be completely wrong.

Fluff. No links to the study, no details, no nothing. If 1 non tobacco user got mouth cancer, and 2 snus users got mouth cancer, snus doubles your risk of mouth cancer, right? Those numbers I listed are meaningless, and within the margin of error. What are the study's numbers?

That's what I was wondering, why no link to the study? Usually Physorg does better reporting. It's the first i'd heard of it though so I posted it, even though it's from 2008. I don't believe it was anything more than an anti-tobacco study like always but I am curious to find out how they justified their conclusion.

Anyway, at worst it still seems no worse then smoking and you still get the benefits of no lung cancer and being able to breathe.

Although the combined previous literature on snus and oral cancer weigh toward no association, this population-based prospective study provided suggestive evidence of snus-related risks that cannot be lightly ignored. (c) 2008 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Translation: Although there is really no evidence that snus causes oral cancer, and all previous literature agrees with concensus, we managed to find a way to make it seem like it does in fact cause oral cancer.

It looks like snus raises the chance of oral cancer by 3 times compared to non tobacco users. That rate goes from .1 cases per 1,000 person years for non users to .3 cases per 1,000 person years for snus users.

Take special note the end of the study where they assess the statistical validity of their numbers. What it boils down to, is there's SOME cause for concern, but further study is warranted. The study in question can be considered inconclusive.

This study shows no increase of cancer risk over time from snus induced lesion...

Lesions go away amongst those that quit snus, and were not an indicator of cancer for those that didn't quit.
