Just been for a run for the first time since stopping smoking.

Guys - if you've stopped smoking due to snus for at least a year - go for a run and you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I've just been out tonight for the first time since I left Her Majesties' and I'm extremely surprised at just how well it went. Seeing that it's the first time I've been out I only did a 3 mile around my work site. Once around the site is exactly a mile and there's the evilist hill at a 45 degree gradient separating one half of the site from the other. So I took that hill 3 times on top of the rest of the run.

No problem and I'm chuffed to bits.

Thanks again snus. Spread the holy word of snus. Snus is my religion.

      whats that?
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I killed because they were annoying......

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

It's dead easy c - work out a mile and start from there - start by running just faster than a walk but keep a constant strict rhythm. Do that 3 times a week and I'll guarantee you that in two weeks you'll be running 3 miles like it was nothing. I'm ex infantry so I'm used to running and tabbing 15 milers constantly with kit on my back, a 4 kilo rifle in my hand and kilos of ammunition - that's when I was lucky enough not to be carrying the GPMG or the milan anti tank missile. I don't ever want to go there again but 5 miles is a very respectable distance and I'd put that at the limit of a sensible run. Any more and I don't think it's that good - unless it's your job.

Do it man - you'll feel a million dollars for it - I promise.

Once I got out of the military, I adopted a rule that said I would only run if somebody was chasing me... with a car. But now I have a lot of friends that are runners and a couple of dogs that would love to jog instead of walk, I am going to get started. I only quit smoking 5 weeks ago and have let myself get extremely out of shape in the last 6 years of working office jobs, so I am going to start off on a stationary bike for the next few weeks and go from there. I have never enjoyed running, but it would feel good to know that I'm at least capable of running a few miles without having a heart attack, so I'm going to work up to it slowly.

LOL, yeah, that was my rule too.

Have you looked at the "Couch to 5k" plan? http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml

I'm thinking about starting that now that I can breathe.

I could barely run the mile in freshman gym class. Then I joined the wrestling team, and it sucked running stairs, but like frosted said it gets better fast. Even tho I am asthmatic I could still do better with practice is what I learned then. If I were to try and run a mile right now at any pace I'd fall over before I finished. That being said I've recently took back to biking. When I first started 2 months ago 2 miles was a task, now I'm doing 5 with no problem. think I'll be doing ten before too long. Yeah exercise is good. I promise I will keep myself in a 36 inch waist, one way or another. I refuse to go to 38. Principle my friends. I have never been a thirty not my size, 32" smallest I've ever been even when in great shape. so I don't mind a fit 34" gotta get back there.

That is actually my plan. I have an iPhone app that allows you to listen to music and gives you audible cues to switch from walking to jogging based on the Couch to 5K program, so once I use the bike to drop a few pounds I figure it'll be easier on my joints if I can start running closer to my ideal weight (I figure I need to drop about 30 lbs at this point).

                    This seems interesting.

                    Going to try it out.

I'm in a 38 now It's amazing how quickly you can get out of shape... 10 years ago, I had a 30" waist, weighed about 190 lbs (at 5'9") and was around 5% body fat. I'm now back down to a 38" waist after hitting 44" at my heaviest. Switching from working out like a maniac to sitting behind a desk and eating fast food 16 hours a day takes its toll fast! I'm back to a job with normal hours, less stress and thanks to snus, getting back into working out should be easier... not being able to breathe was a major factor in not sticking with it in my previous efforts to get more exercise.

I'm amazed at all the ex mil guys who adopted the same attitude as me - "I'm never feckin running again unless I'm being chased by a car" LOL. That was me for the past 6 years totally - the army sickened me with running.

Now - I'm loving it and can't wait for the next run - I've got the bug back and now that I've got a totally clear chest it's a lot easier than I thought.

I despise running. I used to be on the track team back in HS.

I can do without the Shin splints.

I'm a firm believer that your waist size should be the same as your age.
