    Miswaak

    Aloha snusers,

I read another thread about tobacco stained teeth, and Zero recommended a miswaak, so I went ahead and purchased some. I have a question though, do I need to prepare the stick somehow, it doesn't exactly look like the pictures I've seen with a very bristly end. I suppose I should just strip some bark off with a knife?

Once I figure these things out (the simplest of things give me trouble... like twigs), I will share my experience with them.

    Aloha and Mahalo,

yeah, you use either a knife or just your teeth to strip off a bit of the bark - maybe 5mm or so (1/4in). Then just soften it with a bit of light chewing and the bristles should come a bit more alive.

    Check this guy out :

He uses it a bit longer than I do - I keep it a bit shorter and use more the tip...more like polishing each tooth, but both ways are ok. You'll find it makes your teeth really white, though, and it's good for your general health as well

Thanks for the link Zero, very informative. How long does the tip last, and do you keep peeling the bark down further as it gets raggedy?

exactly, just use it until it gets ragged and then cut the bristles and start again

Right after the big nuclear exchange, I promise to do this. In the meantime, I think Proctor & Gamble is safe and that I'll continue using a thing we invented called a toothbrush, followed by flossing and a mouthwash.

Aaahh! A miswaak! I remember using one a long time ago. All the kids in Islamic class wanted one because it's apparently what the prophet Muhammad used. Sometimes there'd be events at the mosque where sellers would sell cool (miswaak & perfumed oils) and not so cool (hijaabs :? ) items. I haven't been to the mosque in yeeears, though. ops:

Ah, you'd have to go back to the old discussion where this came up - it wasn't suggested to replace brushing, but just to supplement. After brushing I find it helps polish and whiten teeth - especially when one has coffee-and-snus teeth. The difference is striking, I find, and it helps strengthen teeth as well, has medicinal benefits, etc. All good stuff.

Dunno, to be honest - I'd just google for it if you can't find them locally. I just pop down to the shop and nab them as they're all over the place here.

                    I ordered mine from islamicbookstore.com

They got my order out very quickly and the price was fine. I'd recommend them. I got a box of twelve for $11.

So yeah! These sticks are cool. Thanks Smarvy! I'm not sure I can be as devoted a user as Mohammad his holiness. But any gain in favor from Allah is better than none. I dig the flavor, like the feel, need the whitening but have one small problem. It seems I will need to suffer not having a pris in. The good thing is that my pallet is well and ready for the next pris.

shoots. I think they make my teeth feel very clean, much cleaner than a toothbrush and paste will. I just use it in the morning after brushing and at night after brushing. I haven't really noticed a difference in whiteness, but I've only used them for a few days now. Glad you got them Juxtaposer! Aloha!

I don't think I really need one, but it's interesting all the same. How long does one last on average?

I got my box of these about a week ago, I'm still using the first one, and I can't see needing another for a while. It probably wont last as long as a toothbrush, but it's still going to last a while.
