    Cholesterol & Snus

I know blood pressure & snus are oftentimes discussed here but what about cholesterol? I just got tested and my levels were all high, including the 'good' cholesterol (I see the silver lining in everything). I remember hearing that nicotine in any form contributes to higher cholesterol. Just wanted to see what you ladies & gents thought of this. I am cutting back on my snusage and started niacin and will get rechecked in a couple months. What a bummer though...

Eat oatmeal (I suggest 'quick' oats for fast cooking) and olive oil, both of which will alter your cholesterol in very good ways:

Here's lists of others foods which do the same:

I would definitely alter eating habits before turning to drugs or giving up snus.

        Hang on, snupy ....

Don't forget Cheerios when you're not in the mood for hot cereal!!

I have the Multi-Grain Cheerios at least 3 or more times a week and all my
cholesterol tests have been up to snuff (and this I nose ... I mean knows).

        BTW, I like your sig:
"Snuff makes me do a happy dance and tell cigarettes to bite me!"

I pretty much shop the edges of the stores, looking for meat (mostly chicken breasts), dairy (small amounts of cheese), fresh veggies (low-carb, not potatos), etc and try to avoid processed foods. I view the US food corporations to be as horrible as the US tobacco corporations and don't really trust the 'frankenfoods' they create in labs. It's not a rule set in stone for me, since I do eat turkey bacon and peanut butter daily, both of which are processed. I wouldn't dare advise others to eat as I do, because I eat for specific purposes and pay particularly close attention to avoidance of refined/simple carbs and am presently eating zero carbs ('negligible carbs would be more accurate) until Halloween, so I'm not even partaking of oatmeal presently and Cheerios are totally off of the list due to carb count/sugar.

I've tried so many low-sugar, no-sugar "cheerios" but they all left me in the dust...
            they literally tasted like sawdust!

Someday someone will come out with a more friendly version but till then I'll
just settle for my multi-grain Cheerios.

But come the cool weather it's more hot oatmeal for me.

Overweight friend went on a diet of lean cut's of meat and green veggies and has maintained normal levels.
              No carbs, no sugar.

My dad has had 3 attacks and 2 or 3 stints put in. Now is on blood thinners. Diet consisted of everything on top of smoking and minimal alcohol.

There is some research out there if you dig about how the bad number is really not the number you should be looking it. I think it was the aborigines who had the lowest cholesteral numbers but the highest amount of heart attacks. THe swiss had the highest amount of cholesteral levels but the lowest amount of heart attacks.

Any whole grain SHOULD keep cholesterol in check.

I do a lot of whole grain everything ... never could tolerate white bread, for instance --
kinda like eating a ball of play-dough.

I've learned that perfection is something you aim for but will never achieve, no matter how
hard you try. You just do the best you can by setting your priorities in the right direction.

True dat, but this is a new thing for me. I had no idea what precise control one could have over one's body, depending on diet & exercise. I drove my bodyfat down to 12.5% 3 years ago, when I was 43 years old. And this was after believing for years middle age meant one must be fat and have a belly. So for me, it's more about working out a precise, almost mathematical formula, to sculpt the body as one wishes, when one wishes to achieve a desired result. Setting a time limit to get there, is more of a test of the idea than anything else.

Just make sure that when you end your sculpting you don't go back
                            to your early nonchalance and then eventually have to start over again;
the next time around can be a bitch and a half!

Of that, I speak from experience.

That said, best of luck in your present reincarnation.

Actually, I am starting over again presently, having not worked out since the first of May. I ate complex carbs all summer, but for about a month, nothing but junk food. In the past two weeks, I shaved 2% off the bodyfat percentage, going from 21% to 19%. Strangely, I was able to hit a weight in certain lifts which were previously impossible and that after only two weeks back. I don't know how much more I can drop off the bodyfat percentage by 10/31 but am curious to see. Some friends saw me over the weekend and said I only had the barest 'pudge' left on my stomach and waist. I should have plenty of time to get totally tightened up by 10/31. It only took a month to get everything tightened back up from 4/1 to 5/1 of this year.

Thanks man. I'm fairly confident I have it down to a science at this point.
