Well I made the mistake if you will with my first order (Northerner) by choosing one item that wasn’t in stock and it appears the whole thing is pending. So as I was out driving around Mother’s day shopping yesterday it dawned on me I was only about 15 miles from the one store I knew per their web site carries the General Brand of Snus…a Tinder Box in the mall.
Needless to say I took the detour and ended up buying a can of General Mint White portion and General White portion. I have to say my first impression was slightly underwhelming but there are caveats.
Mind you as with everything this is my opinion only and as a former flavor chemist I am somewhat skewed but the General Mint White portion had a significant menthol “burn” and a mild taste but that was it. No real peppermint or spearmint notes, just a dominant menthol taste. As for the General White portion it had more flavor overall but the citrusy notes were almost floral, borderline medicinal. It reminded me of the Earl Grey tea my wife used to drink all the time. Someone here on maybe it was on the Northerner description mentioned bergamot which would make sense. I think I was expecting this burst of rich complex flavors from both varieties based upon my lukewarm experiences with the American fare. Yet in retrospect there are some significant caveats:
1. In my eagerness to get some of the real stuff, I didn’t pay attention to age. Upon inspection, I noticed the best buy date for the General Mint White portion was 5/11/2011 and for the General White portion it was 5/30/2011. Although they were refrigerated, maybe they are near the end of their “freshnes” and not very representative?
2. I went with the white portions working under the (“misguided”?) impression that the regular portions would be too moist compared to the limited experience with American-type snus. Maybe I should stick with the regular type since these were a little dry for my tastes.
3. I have gotten some feedback on another thread (thank you) that based upon my cigarette brand of choice (Newport) that the stronger portions may be a better route for me looking for something comparable.
So with all this being said I am glad I ordered mainly all regular portions from Northerner in a variety of flavors. I will say though even with these caveats they were still significantly better than any American fare I have tried so my hopes are still high
