Looking to learn this art form.

I'm brand new to dry snuff. I have a lot of questions and I'm looking to learn as much as I can.

Somethings I would like to know. When you sniff snuff to hard goes into your throat and your cough, if you do it right it just sits in your nose, but eventually it seems to slide down your throat and you swallow. Is it bad or harmful to you that you are swallowing it? if so how do you prevent this?

I know you can pinch it with your fingers and sniff it, use a spoon, a sniffing tube, or a bullet. Out off all of these methods which would be the best for a new user?

Unlike a cigarette, or chew how do you know when it's done? How often should you use some more? How much should you use each time?

Any additional information you think might be worth knowing, small fact, tips any thing please share.

Thanks you for taking the time to read my post, and thanks in advance for an information you can provide me.

I thank for your advice, I'm waiting for my membership to be approved for snuffhouse.

I think I got the placement in my nose right, no more sliding down my throat, instead it's dripping out my nose.

This is indeed the hardest form of using tobacco I've encountered, a true challenge, but one I'm willing conquer, even with my face a mess and dripping nose.

Truly an art form to master.

This may seem crazy......but you might want to try an American Sweet Scotch.

The American Snuffs tend to be finer and dryer and so tend to be a bit harder to take (they have a tendency to jump up the nose and thus dust your lungs). That said I learned to snuff with the Americans.

The reason I think these might work well for you is that after a few hits they tend to block a lot of the nose run. I love the Scotches especially during hey fever and cold season for this very reason. They really help the runny nose quite a bit and also block pollen from getting in there.

Plus the Sweet Scotches are meant for oral use as well the traditional method and thus any drainage to the back of the throat is not as harsh or unpleasant......in fact it can be a bit of a bonus.

On the other hand coarser ground snuffs tend to make my nose run.

I will often recommend people take a hit from say a Dutch or German snuff (Molens for example) let their nose run a bit and then go to a toast or Scotch. The initial running will help to keep the scotch from going too far back while the scotch after a few hit will coat the nose and help prevent the running.

If you live in the South you can pick up a Scotch in most local Grocery stores for next to nothing. Otherwise Mr. Snuff caries a full line of them. Give something like Tube Rose, or Navy Sweet a try.

As far as how often I use it and when I know it is done. There is no set rule....it's really a matter of preference. Just do it when you want to. You will know if you over do it. Then a nice steamy shower in the morning will clean you all out.

          Hope this helps

Edit: Saiga, these are really good questions so if you do not mind I am going to copy this post over to the Beginner's guide to snuff so others can benefit--Thanks

It takes a while to master my friend but the benefits are well worth it. I take a pinch every time I POP in a snus. My tolerance may be high but that's fine. They are both extremely safe forms of tobacco use

Saiga - Just adding...I have read that it is near impossible to OD on snuff so use it however often you feel like it.

Again thanks for the advice. Snusdog that is exactly the type of information I'm looking, someone sort of being a snuff coach, it is very much appreciated. Feel free to use anything I post in anyway you feel proper, I would be glad to help contribute anything I can, even if it's just questions I had. Thanks for everything.

Snusdog, just out of curiosity the scotch snuff you mentioned, the flavor are we talking more like butterscotch or scotch whiskey? I've had chew that was scotch flavored, and had the taste of just taken a shot of whiskey, not very pleasant to me. I'm looking for something sweet, as an example if it was a cigar I would choose an Acid blue blondie, if you have ever tired one, it's a flowery sweet and spicy, like cinnamon aroma. May be a complex mix of scent notes, or even just a simple sweet like someone baking something nice, in addition I like the nicotine level toward the stronger side. I'm going to be making an order off of mr.snuff so any suggestions would be appreciated. I've read through the FAQs and the examples, but the opinion of someone who has experience giving personal advice can't be beat.

Scotch snuff is smoky....sometimes referred to as bbq sniff. The sweet American snuffs have a sweet and less or nonexistent smoke flavor.

For an American snuffs try Rail Road Mills sweet, honey bee or (my favorite) Tube Rose.

                      Sweet from my experiences...

                      Toque Spanish Gem

                      Wilson of Sharrow Vanilla
                      WOS Peach Melba

                      Bernard's Klostermischung

And try McChrystals Original and Genuine. It is a Menthol but awesome and you should try a menthol.

Okay.....when you have it in front of you.....close your airway and drop your tongue and lower jaw with your mouth closed. This will create a slight breeze into your nose that will take the snuff. Easy peazy.

                      I hope I helped.

From your description I think you are really going to like the American Sweets. The name "Scotch" has nothing to do with flavoring (Whisky, Butterscotch, or otherwise) but rather the “scotching” (i.e. scorching) used in the curing process. It also probably helped that many of the makers were Scotch Irish immigrants.

Anyway most if not all Sweets will have a deep molasses scent (like an old world nut bread).

By Comparison Fribourg and Treyer's High Dry Toast smells like a buttered croissant (not sweet but well worth a buy and will also coat the nose a bit...though not quite like the Americans...Still I highly recommend it).

I would also throw in some Molen's Gingerbread. It is a little heavier than the Scotches and the Toasts but is by no means a coarsely ground snuff. It and High Dry Toast are possibly the two bests snuffs around. From your description I think you will really take to the Gingerbread.

However, note: unlike the sweets both the toast and the Gingerbread will have a harsher tasting drainage. Remember, the sweets are made for both traditional and oral consumption. But I would not let that deter me. You can enjoy the toast and Gingerbread in moderation at first and grow into them as you go….or if you just can’t stand them you can trade them for something on the snuson exchange.

As far as the Sweet Scotches go I would start with either: Navy Sweet, Tops Sweet or Tube Rose. I think any of these will be very representative of the Sweets. Also note that all except the Tube Rose also comes in a plain style as well. So make sure you get the Sweet to start with.

If I had to choose one based on your description I would go with the Tops Sweet

                        A Sweet
                        High Dry Toast
                        Gingerbread
And whatever else strikes your fancy (monkey has provided a nice list in the post above)

But in the end the best advice I can give is to try a variety. Snuff is inexpensive and will keep for a very long time with minimal worry. So you can try a lot until you find what works for you.

I hope this helps....keep us posted and let us know what you order.

Much Much thanks for all the input. I think have a fairly good idea on where I'm going with what to try. I've only been using snuff for a couple days and one of my first was lowen-prise I enjoy the menthol in that, I think once I use that to get my nose moist, following it up with one of the scotch sweets sounds like a good idea to me. Like Snusdog said the price is low, and going with the 10g sizes, I can get a variety to see if I can find a favorite to be my every day snuff. I'm interest in the Gawith Hoggarth Almond, because I enjoy marzipan and it's description said that it also has floral notes as well, which seems like something I could like. I'll be sure to come back and give my thoughts as a new user about the suggested ones I try, and any I venture into on my own. Again thanks for the help, as well as making me feel welcome here.
