Hello to all, new member here.

Hi there everyone. I'm Brian, just joined today after doing some research, the powers of google directed me to this fine forum....

I have been a pack-a-day smoker of some wood tipped cigars (Hav-a-Tampa Jewels Sweets) for at least 2 or 3 years now. The past 6 months I have been trying to cut down and eventually quit, but hot damn it's hard to do. Last year I got a few free sample packs of the Marlboro snus which I immediately dismissed and tossed in the drawer. The new girlfriend detests smoking, and all tobacco for that matter, but she met me and decided she could sortof deal with it since I had cut down to a pack every 2-3 days.

Now I have ALWAYS thought American "dip" or "chew" was disgusting. The spitting, the taste, the fiberglass, the mouth cancer was definitely not for me. I always assumed the snus was the same thing. Boy was I wrong...

Well, last week I came across them and decided it was time to give it a try and see how it went. I was pleasantly surprised at how it tasted, the lack of spitting, and the little tea-bag pouch. Granted, they were a bit old, but I really like it. I have since tried the camel version and the jury is still out on which is better.

Researching brought me to a bunch of good info on the reduced risk of gum disease and cancer which I found very appealing. I also now know that the American version of snus is a poor example of the product. Yesterday I placed my first order online for a few different tins and I hope to find something I can switch to from my cigars.

I am happy to give up smoking, it's a nasty habit and I am anxious to quit. I am/was at the point where I actually inhaled those wood tips and without a filter it's taken a toll on my lungs and stamina. I used to be an avid hiker and love the outdoors. Glad to be here and hope to enjoy my Swedish snus soon!!

    My order:
    Northerner Wintergreen (6mg)
    Northerner Citrus & Menthol (6mg)
    General Mint, White Portion (US)
    Catch Eucalyptus, White Portion

    Welcome to SnusOn!

Looks like a decent order for someone used to American "Swedish style tobacco product", but keep in mind it won't taste the same as Marlboro. It won't be nearly as sweet, and a couple of the brands you got will be noticably salty. Traditional snus isn't sweet at all, but some of the newer brands from Sweden have a light sweetness, but nowhere near the American stuff. Just give it time if you don't hit it off right away. It can be an aquired taste, but real snus is the superior product.

I smoked cigars for a year before snus... with snus you'd be able to get outdoors again and hike!

          Welcome Brian.

If you were a cigar smoker, I'd recommend Odens Extreme for the strong tobacco taste.

            Thanks for the welcome everyone.

The sweetness is actually my one annoyance with what I have had. It's just too sweet. I've found that I like to have something to drink while i've got it in. (coffe in the AM, soda or Iced tea otherwise) I tried the Marlboro Wintergreen and that was good. The mint in the round tin was a bit too strong in flavor (mint, not tobacco) and burned almost immediately, not pleasant. The Camel Spearmint was okay. I like the tobacco flavor though, it's really nice compared to burning it. If I find that I don't get the kick I'm looking for from any of the ones I ordered I will try one of the strong portions.

If i were in the states Ettan would be on my order list (available in loose or in portions, though not a stark)... or Pioneer (only in loose)... and Skruf Stark (loose or portions)... or Oden's Extreme (loose or portions)

Personally i would aim for a stark (strong) to get you off craving the smokes.

Keep in mind, none of the snuses you got are particularly traditional. Here's what I'd get for a 5 tin traditional order...

                Grov
                Jakobsson's Classic
                General
                Göteborgs Rapé
                Olde Viking Original

No, not traditional, but I liked the flavored ones so far. I figured I would try them. Thank you for the suggestions. I'll put them on the list for my next order, because there WILL be a next order.

I guess I liked the fact that it was actually regulated as a food product, unlike the US brands.

                    Welcome!
If you are looking for flavored snus try
                    Jak's mint/wintergreen
                    Thunder Frosted
                    General Mint/Wintergreen
I quit smoking about 4 months ago, started using snus about 5, the Swedish snus is far superior, but a completely different thing then the American version, give it a chance, your snus tastes will change, as mine have in my short time. Best of luck getting off the smokes.

The one mistake you made was tossing the Marlboro in a drawer. Proper disposal involves setting it on fire and throwing it into a deep well while cursing the name of Altria unto the seventh generation and calling down biting flies, locusts, and superating infections down on their product planners.

                        Hello Brian. Welcome!

Try everything. You never know what will become your favorite and, if you don't like something just save it and come back to it in a few months. Tastes generally change.....

Welcome Brian! If you find the snus you ordered doesn't quite do it for you, I second Frosted's Odens suggestion, being the Odens whore that I am. And lol at Darwin's reply. I've never tried American snus but I imagine his directions to be appropriate. Enjoy the ride and welcome to Snuson.

Edit good advice here all around so far.

Welcome bro!!! glad to have another hiker on the forum.

Nothing beats fresh snus while overlooking a gorge on crisp fall day

I see Lx has provided a nice list of the traditional flavors ………I also agree with Monkey......try everything........I would also throw in a stark or two (Oden's Extreme and Thunder Frosted will give you a nice idea of the range in that department).
but in the end try a variety and give it time.......your taste will adjust (heal actually)....

And some of the best advice I have ever read on the forum is this: don't try to stop smoking..........just start using snus......smoke when you want to……......in the end the snus and the clear lungs will win
When it's my time to go, I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my uncle did....... Not screaming in terror like his passengers

That made me smile a bit.... heh, I can't wait to get my order. This stuff is horrid.

I fully intend to keep trying new things. I can imagine switching it up a bit once in a while can be fun, like trying new beers and brewers. I hated switching to Black & Milds when I couldn't find my choice cigars. Snus seems like it will be a new adventure and I look forward to my nicotine intake being enjoyable instead of a chore or a burden.

In the past week I've only had a pack of cigars. I just can't seem to give up that one first thing in the AM.
