    Some Questions

    Hello Good People,

I am new to snus and have been lurking here for a couple of days, it seems to me this is the best place to ask questions that are perhaps a little odd, but first a little background on myself.

For the past 3 years I have been "self medicating" of sorts with tobacco, it calms me down, helps with my high stress, takes the edge off my slight OCD, and keeps me what I feel is normal and evened out. The odd part is I only use it maybe 4-6 times per month or around once per week, that's all it takes, and I don't feel I need it anymore than that. I usually smoke a pipe, or take nasal snuff, never smoked cigs. It has been -30 here for most of the winter, and its not comfortable or relaxing sitting outside with a pipe in that sort of weather for an hour +. Its also such low humidity that my nose is incredibly dry and there is nothing fun about snuffing and then getting a nose bleed. I love both my snuff and my pipe but the way it has been lately it pretty much wrecks the benefits I get from them. Which brings me to snus. I recently ordered some general original portion online and it arrived yesterday, I got bent over for customs but it still ended up being cheaper than here for the equivalent.

Anyway, questions time. How long does a tin of snus last after being opened? I'm sure I don't need to explain why this is a concern to me lol Are there any ways to prolong an open tin?
I tried my General tonight and it was pretty enjoyable but the nic hit was way way to much, got some crazy hiccups, but took it out before my head got to spinny (less than 5 minutes). At the rate I use nicotine I know that I will not build up a tolerance anytime soon, is the uptake in a white or mini portion slower or less intense at least? I find the chemistry in snus to be pretty cool, to my understanding it makes more nicotine available by creating a buffer of sorts or altering the ph in your mouth with the salt. less salt = less nicotine hit?
Can anyone recommend a snus that has a low nicotine amount or less of a hit and has a more natural tobacco taste than the General Original Portion. I like the taste of the general snus but I know I would like a more natural tasting version better.

Thanks guys, I'm glad I found this site, seems like a good place to me, I think I will enjoy snus if I can find the right one, I like not having to spit and the discreetness of it, I don't have to go in the cold and I don't get a bloody nose lol

    Welcome to snuson

an an open can outside the fridge will last and 7-10 days before the portions start drying out if it's an original portion, white portions it's negligible really but they all will deteriorate slightly after a while. If you're not using it you can keep it in the fridge and then will keep for a few months. If you're going for long term storage or won't be using it for some time then put it in the freezer, most will say the vacuum seal it to keep it fresh longer and this is true but if it's in date I tend not to as it will keep in the freezer unsealed for about a year. I always say if in doubt or you don't like the taste, put it in the freezer and come back to it later.

mini portions will probably be more suitable to you but I would also suggest trying lös (loose) snus, that way you can determine the size of the snus going in and can experiment with how much works for you, also a tin will last considerably longer than portions. You can then get the pure tobacco flavour snus you want to try such as Grov or Ettan.

the only pure tobacco mini portion that comes to mind is phantom brown, if they still make them as minis and you can find somewhere still selling them.

I'll second using lössnus, and transfer it to a little plastic container, like Tupperware. That'll keep the moisture better, and lössnus will be cheaper, and allow you to micromanage the amount you use, so it can be fine tuned to what you want.

Store your snus in the fridge when the can is opened and you are using it. Non opened cans should go to the freezer.

Keep the snus closer to the front of your mouth and make sure you are using the top lip. The further back in your mouth the more it "runs" and the quicker the nicotine gets delivered. Just keep it up front to keep it from getting too moist and you should stop seeing these effects.

-30 and getting bent over by customs? You sound like a fellow Canadian! I can't think of a plain mini portion so it sounds like lös stored as mentioned may do the trick for you. For plainer lössnus you might want to check out Ettan, Prima Fint or Oden's Original.

I always suggest that smokers try Northerner as an intro to snus from smoking http://us.northerner.com/swedish-snu...-snus-int.html . The benefits of the Northerners, is that they are discreet, no gum irritation, no drip, and come in 3mg and 6mg. If you want to increase the nic these can easily be doubled. For dippers or heavy smokers, I recommend going directly to a los or a strong portion.
