I live in the U.S. and tried snus for the first time (General mint). All I got from it was a mild burn on my inner upper lip and a head rush 10 minutes later. In other words, there was no flavor or taste. If no saliva is involved how do you get any taste or flavor from snus?
How do you get flavor or "taste" from Snus?

Welcome to Snuson. The short answer is "you don't". The snus needs saliva to work its magic.Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I killed because they were annoying......
I've been wrong lots of times. Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

Hi Jayafink! Welcome to SnusOn. Good to have you here.
I see PP's been helping you out there. I just thought I would throw in my thoughts too. Hopefully it's useful to you.
The flavour that you get from Swedish snus can be quite subtle when compared to other smokeless tobacco products, which you do get used to and appreciate over time, but meanwhile here are some suggestions that might help :-
1) Try lightly moistening the portion with your tongue before placing it under your lip.
2) Try Original (brown) portion snus. White Portion snus (the General Mint that you have) is drier than Original (brown) portion snus.
If you like mint flavour maybe try -
Oden's Cold Portion
Offroad Frosted
or if you would like more nicotine you could try -
Jakobsson's Mint Strong Portion
or for even more nicotine -
Nick & Johnny Crushed Ice Xtra Strong
Odens Cold Extra Strong
Thunder Cool Mint (Extra Strong)
and even more -
Odens Extreme Cold Portion
Odens Extreme Double Mint Portion
and the strongest :-) (nicotine) -
Siberia -80°C Brown Power Portion

Thanks, and to the other person of course I know how to generate saliva. I did quite a bit before putting the pouch in but it still dried up quickly. I will keep trying. Maybe my body is just reacting to having something unfamiliar in my mouth and is causing it to dry out too quickly (I was not a dipper before trying snus). Also, thanks for the suggestions of other flavors. I will place a bulk order and give them a try.

Hey Jayafink. Welcome.
Just to give my 2 cents. I assume your using portions. With portions I just put them in my lower lip. you get lots of saliva and flavor that way. That being said I also never spit with snus either portions or loose. With more saliva being produced in the lower lip , this may be a problem if you spit and you want to remain discreet. Like I said just my 2 cents. My mind is like a bad neighborhood. I don't need to go there alone.:biggrin-new:

The real answer ... because taste is the sensation on the tongue, and aroma or smell is the sensation in the nose ... is that all snus tastes, salty and slightly bitter ... what people are referring to when they talk about taste is the aroma or smell. If you are upper-lipping the snus in a traditional way, you can get the aroma much better if you blow air in to your upper lip (inflating it with a closed mouth) a few times. This releases all the aromatic compounds in whichever snus you have there and you can identify the aromas as they go up in to the nose (the nose is the chimney of the mouth and 99% of the taste of foods you chew is identified there) ... so just puff up your upper lip several times to experience that lovely taste.Squeezyjohn
Sometimes wrong and sometimes right .... but ALWAYS certain!!!

The whole point of the white portions is to produce less saliva and thus reduce the need to spit. Thus snus can be used more discretely in a variety of settings
That said, making sure your mouth is hydrated and also putting the portion on your tongue to moistening it up a bit will help open up the flavor (or scent if you prefer SJ's take on the matter---by the way good to see you Squeezy!!!!). I find with a lighter snus that once you have identified flavor (gotten flavor initially) it is much easier to find it in the future......your nose/moth know what they are looking for.
Anyway, keep us posted on how it goes and welcome to the forum mate! When it's my time to go, I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my uncle did....... Not screaming in terror like his passengers

hi.
first post on this forum. proud to see that the backbone in Swedish culture can please others.
there's only one way to "snusa" to get the proper taste thought when making. having it under lip until it doesn't taste any more. you can then taste the whole spectrum of flavours divided into different steps.
for beginners: forget all types of snus that has flaouvours, for example mint, Lacroix spearmint.
why?
they are stronger to your lip.
try a normal general och ettan. both Swedish match.
"lös" is the same snus as portion, just packed differently.
white is the same to, just a different type of bag.
so what do I recommend? try to make a small snus out of "lös" snus. since your lip hasent been stretcht out yet you will find it less painful to make a smaller "prilla" to start with.
translate
lös = no bag, loose snus.
prilla= Swedish for a portion of snus.
snusa= equals smoking except for snus in Swedish.
you have fine tobacco in the US. I can give you some recipes if you want to make your own the Swedish way.
I use burley and Virginia tobacco in my own.
