Another newbie recommendation for a dipper.

    Hello to all,

I am glad I found this forum with a wealth of information!

I am looking for a snus recommendation. I have been dipping Skoal Straight for at least the last 15 years and looking to try some snus. So far I have only tried some General Loose which I found to be OK. To me it tasted similar to Copenhagen dip, but again I am looking for something that will be an easier transition for a Skoal Straight dipper......hope that makes sense.

I was just going to order a variety but there are some many different kind/flavors out there. Just looking to narrow down my selection for my first order.

    Thanks!

If you dipped skoal straight you should try Probe Whiskey. It is similar but different. It is available in loose and portion. You could also try Grov loose or portion, but I would say those taste similar to Cope. And read the thread that Chad pointed out.

        Welcome Eddy!

Skoal straight has a unique flavor. I'm not sure that I can place a snus brand that is similar. Grov los might be a little more like Skoal straight than General, but I don't know of any snus that is really close to that flavor.
        Good luck!

          Welcome to Snuson eddydb

Unfortunately, the advice I can give you is only this. Just set out and try everything. Snus so funny, you simply have no way of predicting what you will actually like. And even though you were a dip[per, give portions a try as well. Snus is so different, keep an open mind, keep trying stuff, you will learn soon enough what you love

          And welcome again.

I've never had skoal straight, but if it's more of a pure tobacco kind of taste, I'd try some Ettan or Knox perhaps. Both of those, from what I remember, are pretty straight-forward tobacco flavors.

Eddy, welcome to the forum. I spent 20+ years dipping (Copenhagen/Red Seal/Timber Wolf). The best advice that I can give is that instead of trying to find a snus that tastes like dip, try to find the brands of snus you really like. Go into it opened minded. Get a sampler pack. Try a variety with the idea that this is a new product not a dip look-a-like.

Snus and dip are different (otherwise why bother changing). I have always said moving from dip to snus is like moving from Foldger’s instant to a fine roasting house blend.
Snus is more natural and thus the flavor is more refined (which can mean more subtle- at first). Give it time.

After a while, if you should revisit Skoal my bet is that you will be surprised that you ever put it in your mouth (kind of like returning to boxed wine after spending time in France)

Anyway check out the Dipper’s guide. There is a list there of recommended snus brands that are stronger in taste and thus helpful in making the transition from dip.

Hope this helps and keep us posted on how it is going.

Correct, Probe is about as sweet as Swedish gets. I found Skoal Straight (while good and stuff) to be exceedingly sweet.

I should be placing my first order very very soon.

Funny. I was a Skoal straight/Grizz straight dipper too. I bought a can of Skoal straight on Thursday for ha-ha's I don't think that I was able to keep one in for more than 30 minutes. Though the taste was great my gums cursed me beginning with the third pinch. Of course I went straight to a big-mama pinch and none of this 1-gram snus-sized pinch. It's now Sunday and I still have about a third of the can left. A can of that never lasted two full days.

I've just recently started doing dip, and I do like it. But I like snus more, for many reasons. One main thing, for me, is it's easier, and less mess. I snus all day at work, behind a desk, and I snus when I go out shopping and whatnot, and I snus when I drink. I find dip to be nice when I am just hanging around at home after work, playing on the net or watching TV. I would not want to have a big lip and a spit can at work or walking around the mall, and drinking seems to be hard with dip in too. So for me, it's maybe a 2 dips a day thing in the evenings, and maybe more on the weekends if I'm not out. I don't know if I'll continue with it, I can't say that about anything.

As far as a snus that is like Straight dip, which I do like, just got a can of Skoal Straight, and have an open can of Grizzly Straight, I don't think there is a snus that is like that. I also only snus portions for the most part, yet I prefer the Long Cut dip. Since Straight has a sweetness about it, I'd recommend Offroad Original, though it's not similar, it does have a sweet element to it.

You sound like a Grov/Ettan kinda guy to me(I am too!).

                          I'd suggest starting there.

Well I get the Swedish Match dips such as Longhorn Straight or Redman Straight and I don't know why, maybe cuz I dip it in front or because I take small dips, I never need to spit! even bottom lipping it... very rarely like once every few mos do I salivate while dipping.... I don't think I swallow that much... yeah I love the sweetness of straight and I think Triumph was like that... was so awesome, packed nicely in the can like the premium snuses... star pattern and all with the ashtray lid... dang I wish swedish match would just make it on their own and sell it through Pinkerton or something but I guess not enough people went for it. Sometimes I will use Grizzly Pouches for Straight but they are a tad too large ... i like them anyways... my bud uses two pouches rotflmao so I don't show him the can no more.... he too dips redman straight.. pouches are so much easier to get out of your mouth so that is what I like about pouches and portions.... otherwise dipping snus up top is not that hard to do... some folks I know use Wolf Peach up top lip obtw Timberwolf is also Swedish Match
