Storing snus.

I know that Snus should be stored in the fridge or freezer for long term use but my parents arnt fond of tobacco.

If I store tins for about 7 weeks in a dark drawer thats about 65 degrees would they be ok? Or I could throw them in my car where the temp would fluctuate between about 10 to 40 degrees and would be about 65 for brief times everyday.

Edit: The tins would stay in there original packaging with only one open at a time.

I think I'd keep them in a drawer. I'm guessing stable and warm would be better than constantly changing temperatures.

Snus should be stored at ~46F. I don't have any direct experience, but I would not expect a non-refrigerated can to last past its expiration date.

Why not get a few re-freezable ice blocks (the foam kind - these do not condensate as they thaw), and just rotate them out a couple times a day? I would guess you would greatly extend the life of your snus.

I think 7 weeks would be pushing the limits. Couldn't you hide it in an empty spinach container or something like that? Hopefully, Lazer will see this thread and give you some great ideas for hiding tobacco!

Please folks. Snus has been around for much longer than refrigeration. Reason they are made the way they are.

Seriously..... 7 weeks will be just fine. Cool place like a drawer is excellent. I have had cans sit out for far longer than 7 weeks that were as good as any "fresh" cold ones I had. The snus will be just fine.

Please don't pass on unnecessary myths. You have had a snus can sit out 8 weeks and go bad??? Then post about it. But otherwise, please don't assume anything.

Actually I have no problem in having to hide my snus. Just my nasal snuff. :wink:

With that said my personal preference is to refrigerate all my snus. As the "best by" dates pass, I tend to move them to the freezer OR adjust my rotation to use them up faster. Admittedly I'm still learning the pros/cons on storing snus and the "best by..." dates issue and am a little biased or say nervous since my comparison is only to Copenhagen dip over the years as it tending to dry up and drastically change taste if not stored properly OR used within weeks of their "Made by" dates.

But if you are talking Nasal snuff. Right now I just store it in my locked briefcase and very well hidden in sock drawers in my bedroom. Soon I will probably start burying in it the yard in a strong box.

Edit: Oh, back to snus. I usually have 4 or 5 tins in my daily rotation which includes one lös snus. These are pretty much room temperature with me occasionally throwing them in the fridge for the overnight. I would estimate some of them are still in use up to 14 days depending on my preferences at the time and I've yet to have one "dry up" or turn on me flavor wise due to room temp for a week or two.

I would imagine snus manufacturers recommend refrigeration for a reason. After all, it is a pasteurized product, much like your milk. But I'm sure you can leave it at room temperature for a few weeks without it becoming rancid. After 7 or 8 weeks it may not be optimal, but you certainly aren't going to get sick...
