Everything I needed to know about snus...

...I learned by using snus! Here I am, a couple of months into using snus daily. What have I learned?

That there is a world of difference between the Camel product I first tried, which was the only thing locally available, and real Swedish snus. I tried to finish off the few Camel "Mellow" portions I've had sitting in their tin for some weeks, and after acclimating myself to real snus, the experience was what I assume sucking on a urinal cake would taste like. A urinal cake with sweet-n-low. These little white cottony tubes wouldn't make a suitable gerbil tampon, let alone a respectable method of snus delivery. Yuck.

Don't be afraid to diversify your palette! I went from Camel to General Mini Mint. The Mini Mint was a comfortable transition, but only weeks later I rarely touch it. The rich and salty flavors of General Original, Roda Lacket, Taboca and others have quickly become favorites. So, to new snusers used to sweeter American tobacco products, don't give in. Not only does the stuff grow on you, the natural tobacco flavors of snus will become downright palatable. Even tasty!

I've also learned that snuson is a great place to be. I've lurked for a bit, and only posted scarcely, but I've already had great experiences here. Thanks to boardmember Monkey and a generous trade, I've already been exposed to more snus than I ever thought I'd try. Thanks, snuson community!

Now in closing, a couple o' questions:

Drippy portions make my mouth dry. Not so much at first, but once I start to really get some flavor in my mouth it just dries right up. Not just cottonmouth, it's worse than that. Maybe more like Sham-wow mouth. I dunno. Anyone else experience this?

When I quit smoking, I noticed flavors returned. I could taste food again. And long time users of snus (or other ST products) notice prolonged usage affects your taste buds? Can this happen?

I'm nicotine sensitive. Or am I? After a couple of months of snusing, I still get a pretty noticeable nicotine lift when I pop a snus. Not a "buzz" per se, a buzz is what we tried to get as kids when we'd steal a bottle from our parents liquor cabinet. No, this is just a good nic kick. I only use 2-3 portions a day, and tend to keep them in for a couple of hours each, so this may account for the fact that the nicotine honeymoon hasn't ended. Anyone else still get that warm fuzzy nic feeling after prolonged usage?

One last thing: a good drippy snus can work wonders on a sore throat. It's true! About two weeks ago I was struggling with a massive head cold, and the sore throat was killing me. I noticed when I'd have a nice moist portion in my lip, the tingly drip would actually make my throat feel better. So remember, try snus as a throat lozenge next time you have a cold. It helps!

    Cheers all!

i have gotten that "Sham-wow" mouth, and thanks to that i have not been dehydrated in a week, or gotten that pesky headache that goes along with dehydration that goes most of the time unnoticed.

As far as the Snuson community i've got to say that i agree with you 100% they are very information-full folks and thus making my curiosity level go through the roof. i have not been doing this for a couple of months like you, a mere week has gone by, and i have, thanks to wonderful people, tried a variety of stuff. even nasal snuff (which i love). keep trying stuff out, i also recently tried general original (i thought i wouldn't like it because it is unflavored) and i love it. I haven't tried Roda Lacket, or Taboca but will soon. 'til then... XOXO

I've only tried the Roda Lacket lös, not the portions, but I can only imagine they're just as good. If you haven't tried any lös snus, I highly recommend that Roda Lacket be your first. Incredible naturally sweet tobacco flavor, and the stuff is just begging to be formed into a pris. I've tried a few other loose varieties, and nothing came close to Roda in ease of forming a pinch and holding together.

Taboca Strong Mini is just plain great. I posted my own little amateur review on it in the review section. I would definitely suggest adding a can of this to your next order.

sham wow mouth huh? thats pretty funny. You wouldn't happen to be ripping a bong while snusing, would you? Cause that would probably do it...

I would suggest that you drink plenty of water or some other hydrating substance both while snusing and throughout the day. The drying out could be a reaction to the salt, which your mouth will just kind of get used to over time.

You have been using snus for awhile, so it is possible that you are already used to the salt and just don't naturally produce that much saliva. In this case I would suggest adding some sugar free chewing gum and interdental picks to your diet, as I drool all over myself whenever I use either of these things.

            Dry Mouth

I too find that I get a very dry mouth while snusing. I have now adopted Tea into my diet and find that it provides the moisture that I need and also a little flavor to wash down some of the juice.

            That is my trick...

I guzzle obscene amounts of water at work, my co-workers think there is something wrong with me. I've always required a lot of water, but with snus even more so. I don't mind, it's healthy, and it gets me hydrated for the beer that flows after 6.

you're probably on to something with the salt. I work a pretty physically strenuous job, and I tend to get dehydrated anyway. the salt probably isn't helping. definitely more liquids in between snus-ing may do the trick.

Actually, salt helps you retain water. Back in the day here in the south they used to have salt tablet dispensers at construction sites to help the workers not lose so much water during the hot summers— Of course the entire work force died of hypertension so the salt pills were replaced with Gatorade.

It’s the Nicotine that is the diuretic.
When it's my time to go, I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my uncle did....... Not screaming in terror like his passengers

which explains the wrinkle lip. the salt draws moisture from the lips and gums and leave them wrinkled thats why having a drink on hand helps.

Yeah, I remember being told many a story of my dad's little league days were the children were clothed in wool uniforms and given salt tablets throughout the game. It is amazing to me that none of them dropped dead of heat exhaustion.
