Is it supposed to smell like this?

Hi, I recently bought 2 tins of snus to try:
- Skruf stark
- Thunder Berry Blend

As a former dipper, I'm used to the flavors and smells of american dip. Now, I opened the can of skruf stark first, and took a smell of it, and it smells like fish. Is it supposed to? Then, i tried one out and i found the taste to be... well, just unappealing -- bland. I had heard a lot of people reviewing thunder berry blend and talking about how it tasted just like candy, so i figured i would open that and try it next. This stuff smells just the same, like fish. I got no hint of and berry smell from it at all. And then when i put it in, no berry taste. It tasted just like skruf stark.

Am I doing something wrong?

Skruf stark might smell funny to you. I'm used to it, so it smells normal to me. Also, the flavor will appear muted in comparison to American dip. I can't comment on Thunder Berry, as I haven't had it. Try a few different brands, and keep at it. In general, snus has a milder flavor than Americans are used to. After awhile you should be able to pick out the subtle flavors and nuances. It's like comparing Arbor Mist to good wine. Arbor Mist kind of tastes good, but the flavor's too strong, and it gets old after awhile. The good wine might not be as immediately approachable, but it's more rewarding over the long haul.

There is a famous snuson saying. For a reason... Don't smell the snus.

Especially for newer folks, it is just a strange and unfamiliar smell.. Start using it enough, over time, that will change for you.

But more important. It is simply to early for you to be judging how the snus tastes. You can't taste it yet. Your body needs at least a week to two weeks to acclimate to the salt before you can finally start tasting what snus really tastes like. What you tasted today??? That is not what the rest of us taste, just what it tastes like someone new to snus.

My best advice is keep using, and get a wider sample. I have always mentioned Northerner's Top 10 Box as an excellent example of a good sampler pack. Just keep using for a few weeks before you judge.

Welcome! I agree, keep at it. It took me a while to come around to the smell. Now I really like it (or else I wouldn't have tried it-really tried it) 3 weeks ago.last summer I had tried the camels, and although I truly like camel frost, u can't even compare it to "good" snus. I tried marloro rich last week and although itsmells amaretoish, I popped it in my lip and yuck. I really like general original, and thunder frosted. If you are looking for a sweet taste, try some of the discreetsn like strawberry and peach, I've found them to be a good desert taste, but not much kick. Offroad cranberry has a good cran falvor that seems to last a long time. (Listen to me pretending to be a knowledgable abt this and still I'm so new; however since I AM so new, that might help.) Don't get discouraged and I promise after a while, if you there will be nothing better. Right now I've got thunder wintergreen in my mouth and I most say that I like the fact that it is not overpowering with wintergreen flavoring.

I just had a thunder berry and drank coffee with it, and it was great. The coffee definitely overpowers the snus, but it's a good way for me to get used to it. I got just a little watered-down taste of the snus and then a nice sip of coffee to help wash it down. I think i'm always going to have a drink with my snus until I acquire the taste.

Actually, I drink constantly which has made me realize thathad been walking around dehydrated forever. I keep water around always.

Just don't take sage's advice concerning los snus. Los'ing is like anal sex with a women. It can be kinda messy but nonetheless an experience well worth trying occasionally and when the mood is right it can be quite rewarding.

No, no, no my friend. I have never "advised" against los. Wouldn't even ream of such. ALL I have ever done, and will always continue to do, is make the loud point that "liking" los is not necessary. That if someone even thinks they might prefer portions, that is A OK.


But...if los your thing, go for it!!!! :wink:
