Snus in cardboard cans tasting like pencil shavings

I pulled a can of loose Grovsnus out of the freezer, took a pinch and it tasted and smelled terrible. It reminded me of back when I used to chew on a number 2 lead pencil or the smell that came from a pencil sharpener. I pulled out a can of General Extra Sterk and it's the same.

Did I freeze it wrong or something?

Probably not. Although the cardboard cans are so "old school", personally, I prefer plastic. I have noticed flavor issues before from cardboard. But the freezing itself?? I have just always thrown my cans naked into the freezer. Doing that for over 3 years now. That in itself has never hurt the snus, even snus almost 2 ears old.

I think I figured out what happened... I had an order delivered to the shop so I put it in the freezer for about 6 hours, then on my way home I was out running errands for a few hours. I think during that time it melted in my truck and picked up a bad taste from the cardboard or something. The taste is only with the stuff from that order that is packed in cardboard cans.

That's odd. I've frozen los, then put it in the fridge (then back to the freezer) and I've never noticed any difference. The cardboard has a wax lining. So unless it got warm enough to melt the wax I don't see how the cardboard or wax could have flavored the snus. If you figure out what did it let us know so we can avoid it.

Well, whatever it was the bad taste has dissipated and everything seems fine... just a noob I guess. Seems that allowing it some time to air out has done the trick.

I've never noticed it, but that doesn't mean anything. Generally when I freeze my snus, I use one of the new Ziplock do it yourself vacuum seal bags. Cheap, easy and it's been working well for me.
