    Salt Content-General and Skruf??

    Salt Content-General and Skruf??

I know this topic has been discussed numerous times by having done
    a search.

However can someone give me a simple comparison of how much
sodium is in about 7-8 Generals or Skruf Portions? I am not on a
low sodium diet but I do not use table salt or add much to my food.

Six garlic Triscuits have 135 mg of sodium which is 6% of the RDA.

How would Snus compare to this?

    thanks!

A General portion's about 290mg if I'm looking at it right.

Are you saying one portion has the sodium of `12 salted Triscuits??

If one used 10 portions daily that would be 2,900 mg of sodium which is
      over one's daily requirment.

That would be too much salt if true

Or did you mean a can contains 290 mg? That would not be bad.

      Edit:
      --
If the contents of one can is 24 grams would 3 % salt
      be 720 mg? I multiplied 24 by .03 and got .72.
.72 of a gram is 720 mg. 720 mg salt per can.

This would make Skruf at 5 % salt 1200 mg per can.

      Is this correct at all?

I could be wrong, but as I understand it, a portion weighs about 1 g. So if one portion has 290 mg of salt, that would mean it's almost one-third salt. As salty as they are, that just doesn't sound right.

It sounds like a lot to me also. I have issues with decimal places, so follow my logic here, and see if it makes sense. 1mg is 1 thousandth of a gram. A portion is 1g, and 2.9% of that is salt, or 2.9 hundredths of a gram. To convert that to thousandths we need to move the decimal 2 places to the right which would give you 290 milligrams. Does that sound right?

          Edit:
I see my mistake. it's .029g of salt. I forgot to move my decimal going from percent to weight. So then, moving it 2 places right gives us 29mg of salt which sounds about right.

          Edit2:
          ...

3 places to the right... :^S

I really like Phantom OP, and I don't know what it's salt content is, but I find them not so salty.

hmm... so to put it in perspective, a snus portion has a little less salt than one garlic triscuit. Fun game.

Since you're using many of them a day, snus salt content should not to be overlooked in diet, in my opinion. I come from a family of hypertensives, So I've cut most really high salt foods(hot sauce being the worst, ramens), and I don't add salt to any food. Snus has got it covered.

I am hypertensive. I've never used additional salt on food. I've always hated salt. But, since I've been snusing, I occasionally find myself really craving a high salt portion (Phanbrix original comes to mind). It has had absolutely no adverse effects on my blood pressure, and believe me, my pressure is very touchy.

Not scientific proof by any means, but I think worrying is more physically adverse.

Hey, don't worry about it, lxskllr, I'm mathematically challenged, too.

I'm hypertensive as well, and although I haven't eliminated salt from my diet, I try to avoid high-salt foods. Makes me a little concerned that I might be getting a little too much salt along with my nicotine.

Maybe we should start compiling a list of less-salty snuses? Might be helpful not only for those of us watching salt intake for health reasons, but also for those who just don't care for the flavor of salt.

I have spent a lot of time researching this, as I too am restricted as far as salt intake is concerned, I use a 50 mg per snus average to keep track. So ten snus a day is 500mg, reasonable amount, although sometimes the taste of salt is off the charts to me, worst part of snussin. Chad has far more dramatic effect on my blood preasure than snus. Chad, you are a good sport about all of this I must say!!! Try not to get banned again, ok?

It sounds like if we watch the other salt intake in our diet we
                        will be OK.

And there is the benefit of not smoking and it's effect on the blood vessels, etc.

                        Edit:

I looked at some food for the sodium content. Two slices of Orewheat
bread contain 300 mg of sodium. One Raisin Bagel contains 350 mg.
One can of Sierra Mist contains 35 mg.

A quarter teaspoon of salt not used should make up for a days sodium
from snus. Depending on Skruf at 5% or General at about 3% sodium.

Here's a table of how salt measures up:

                        1/4 teaspoon salt
                        = 575 mg sodium

                        1/2 teaspoon salt
                        = 1,150 mg sodium

                        3/4 teaspoon salt
                        = 1,725 mg sodium

                        1 teaspoon salt
                        = 2,300 mg sodium

                        1 teaspoon baking soda
                        = 1000 mg sodium
