    Questions about snus

    My questions are as followed:

    1. I live in a hot part of the United States, where days reach between 96 and 102 degrees and I keep my snus refrigerated. I take my snus out and put it in my pocket so I can uses while I am going places. If I keep my can in my pocket on hot days, will that hurt it?

    2. How long is a can of snus good for? It usually takes me about 3 to 5 days to finish a can because I use american dip more than I use snus, so I dip a couple times a day, and then snus a couple times a day. (In the process of quitting Copenhagen and primarily using swedish snus).

    3. Some of the snus I have tried has smells very strong after being in my pocket for awhile, is that normal?

    4. Can snus spoil?

    Thank you for you time.

    Welcome to SnusOn, inib2009!

    1. You should be alright, just don't leave the can on you dashboard in the sun.
    2. I think 3-5 days is no problem even with those temp changes from hot pocket to fridge.
    3. Snus smells very strong. You will probably learn to love that smell in time.

I personally don't like my loose snus warm and I work outside so it's an issue in my pocket. So I keep it in a cooler bag in the van. If I'm away from the van I throw a can in my pocket.

      Hiya, welcome to SnusOn!

      1) Nah, snus is fine at room temperature, or even hot like a pocket. I prefer my snus chilled, and carry a cooler where practical(in my car), but I also carry it warm when I have to. It's only a preference.

      2) Snus is good just about indefinitely. It isn't always in the best shape, but it's still usable. I just finished up a tin of V2 Jule snus lös that I opened in Dec 2008. It was kept in my fridge the whole time, but it was dry as a bone. Despite the crappy mouth feel due to being so dry, I preferred the flavor to when it was new. The wine notes mellowed significantly, and I liked it a good bit better than I did when I first opened it.

      3) Snus smells strong. Warm snus smells stronger. That's completely normal.

      4) I've seen 1 report so far of moldy lös snus. I think there may have been extenuating circumstances, but I can't exactly remember. As a general rule, snus won't spoil. I use fairly old snus on a regular basis, and other than moisture content, it's fine.

Welcome initb2009. What Snuffleupagus said. Anyhoo, I'm an ex-copenhagen snuff dipper myself. 30 year habit up until aprox last Oct when I discovered the wonder world of Swedish Snus after toying around with camel frost. Although all these new restrictions via the FDA and PACT horseshit have me contemplating on going back to some form of 'dip' simply to alleviate the hassles and worries of potentially having to jump through hoops to get the good snus + seems some of my favorites are dropping off the availability charts for us American's due to the FDA takeover, I can tell you if you can put that copenhagen down once and for good (Which you Can), the snus will win out and your teeth and gums will thank you. I've found dental hygiene also much more efficient and productive since switching to snus - even lös / loose snus for some reason is much easier on my gums and mouth in general as opposed to loose dip.

        Good luck and Welcome again!

          Welcome to SnusOn!

          1. I live in a hot part of the United States, where days reach between 96 and 102 degrees and I keep my snus refrigerated. I take my snus out and put it in my pocket so I can uses while I am going places. If I keep my can in my pocket on hot days, will that hurt it?
I live in Arkansas, where it's about that hot. I keep a snus can out for several days at a time as I'm working through it, and I don't notice any loss of quality.

          2. How long is a can of snus good for? It usually takes me about 3 to 5 days to finish a can because I use american dip more than I use snus, so I dip a couple times a day, and then snus a couple times a day. (In the process of quitting Copenhagen and primarily using swedish snus).
See above. Usually about 3-5 days is a good timeframe. Usually if I use it, but not that much, I keep it in the fridge. I keep all my unopened snus in the freezer.

          3. Some of the snus I have tried has smells very strong after being in my pocket for awhile, is that normal?
It depends on how long you keep it in there. Being new to snus, naturally a lot of it is going to smell strong. But that's not typical from what I've noticed. Usually it should seem to get milder the longer it's out, especially the more traditional flavored snuses.

          4. Can snus spoil?
It's not typical, but it's not unheard of (in los, as lxskllr said), I've heard of it before. Just keep it in the fridge if you're going to have it out for more than 5 days just to be safe.

          Thank you for you time.
