A review from my blog about Granit Portion & Granit Maxi

I recently reviewed Granit Stark and Granit Special White,
and later realized that I had never reviewed Granit Portion. I also realized I'd never actually had Granit Maxi, so I threw some of each onto my recent SnusCENTRAL.com order so I could revisit Granit Portion and also review Granit Maxi. Granit is an "economy" priced snus from F&L, the same company that produces Lucky Strike and produced Retro in the past. I've always wanted to try Granit Maxi, having really liked General Maxi in the past. I found General Maxi to be big on flavor and big on size - so I hoped Granit Maxi would present the same. One thing that's good to note about Granit is that now the cans come complete with a catch lid, a feature that wasn't around in the past. A catch lid is almost imperative if you're always snusing on the go, so I'm glad to see this is now a feature.

Now, to compare the portions. Granit Maxi is obviously much bigger than Granit Portion. If you've tried the US Skoal "Snus", it's around the same size, maybe a tad smaller. Granit Portion has a nicotine content of 8mg, whereas Granit Maxi has a nicotine content of 12mg. Both are very moist, having a moisture content of 52%. Granit Portion has 24 portions in a can, whereas Granit Maxi only has 14. Each Granit Portion is around 0.9grams in size, whereas each Granit Maxi is around 1.4-1.5grams per portion. So that's a little about each one and the specifics, let's get into the flavor.

Granit Portions look a lot like V2's Phantom portions. Some are quite moist where some look semi-moist, a little inconsistent. The aroma is very clean, a slightly sweet lemon aroma comes through when you open the can. The portions have a great mouthfeel with minimal fluffing required before lip insertion. The taste of Granit is quite interesting. A very clear and fresh flavor with a very present tobacco taste and a slight sweetness with little hints of lemon and a peppery taste. Granit at times reminds me of the old Retro Snus, and sometimes it reminds me of Olde Viking Original Portion. The taste is pretty mellow and balanced and lasts quite some time. Granit, as an economy priced snus, is a pretty decent snus. Not my favorite and one I probably wouldn't reorder, but if you're looking to save a buck, check it out. Granit is around 0.50 cents cheaper than some of the other snuses of similar flavor profile.

      Chad:

The Granit Original Portions look very dry compared to what I've had. Perhaps this is a reformulation on F&L's part, or maybe you got a bad can.

I wouldn't mind trying Granit White Portion, but it's MORE expensive than General, Grov, Ettan, etc. on Premium Snus.

Yeah I was surprised because the Granit I had recently (the new ones) were quite fresh, these just didn't seem to have much quality to them.

I actually kinda liked them plus the (new?) can is great. And I would agree with snusjus...I just finished a can a couple days ago that was received in earlier this month and they kinda stuck together they were so moist...

Actually, all I can smell and taste in this snus is citrus. A very mellow taste which i find to be a mix of citrus and bergamot, maybe a little peppery. Nothing special, but i think its an allright snus.

I've tasted a lot of snus in the last year but for some reason I only tried Granit portions in the past week.

I was not expecting to be so good.

It's simple, the portions are great, the taste lasts a while, for me a perfect snus.

Nothing too complex as I seem to appreciate.

First, I'll have to disagree with other folks saying this is like General. That's like when your mom used to buy you the cheap, horrible versions of soda pop and said to you, "Mr. Popper is just like Dr Pepper, now shut up and drink it." Except in this case, Granit is not a cheap imitation of General. It's its own thing. And in my certainly correct opinion , it's superior.

I do not care for General. I have grown very, very fond of Granit. It is currently my "anytime, all-day" snus, and the one I use more of than any others combined.

But, since they are basically the same idea, a comparison can be made. Granit is less peppery, more salty, less bergamot-ey but more lemony, and with a completely different smoke flavor. And it's better than General because all of that. There ends the comparison.

Starting with the smoke flavor: F&L must use a different smoke flavoring in this than any other snus I've tried. Not sure what it is, exactly, but it's more "ashy". It's like burned tobacco and it works really well.

Granit is a little peppery, but not too much, and that seems to go away quickly. It is nice and salty, which I like.

Then there's the lemon. It's faint, but it's there, and it adds a nice freshness.

And finally, there is just the tiniest bit of something sweet in the background. Not to say that Granit is sweet. It isn't, and I really doubt there is any added sweetener in this. But whatever it is (maybe the salmiak?), combined with the hint of lemon is just enough to "take the edge off." It rounds it out perfectly and makes one want to keep using this snus all day.

It is just a good, solid snus.

The only complaint I have about this - and it's a very small one - is the portion shape and size. I wish the pouches were a bit narrower, and that they were filled a bit more.

I think I'll always have a kind thought for Granit. Because when I was going through the process of switching cigarettes with snus, it was the first snus that I woke up in the morning and wanted instead of a smoke. It was the one I started looking forward to having after dinner. Granit was the snus that "hooked" me.

I just finished a first tin of Granit op and it is just a middle of the road flavor to my tastes. The tobacco, bergamot, and salt flavors are pretty ordinary as one would expect from a basic snus. I also get a distinct sweet lemon flavor that smells nice in the tin but was more than I cared for by the time I had finished the tin. The portions are on the moist side of the scale, which is fine with me, and they are large pouches but about half full....still very comfortable once fluffed and flattened.
I'm just picking here, but the finger pull in the catch lid has to be aligned each time it is closed which isn't convenient. The shape of the tin is nice as it it has more rounded top and bottom edges than most and is more user friendly in the pocket.

For me, a decent snus, an OK snus experience, but not a reorder.
