A Review of Knox Portion
by Snusophile
The low priced brainchild of Skruf, introduced in February of 2006, is thought by many to be an excellent and unique low cost alternative to the typical, "this IS Swedish Snus" bergamot dominated flavor profiles of Swedish Match et al.
However, the purpose of this review is to determine what, exactly, makes Knox Portion snus so unique.
Knox Portion comes in a handsome and sturdy black can; a stark deviation from it's big brother Skruf. Upon opening the can, at first sniff, the aroma of Knox is very unique. If you are used to the peaty and salty aroma of Ettan and Grov, or the soured citrus aroma of General, Knox may come as a bit of a shock. The scent does not bite with ammonia, and I found it very pleasant, yet indistinguishable.
The portions inside were arranged in a manner typical to Skruf products: stuck together in a big lump. As of late, proportional to high demand, the quality control with Knox has receded some, causing a few of the portions to be slightly less full than they should. The portion material is comfortable, while a bit stiff much like its big brother Skruf.
Early on, the flavor of bergamot is noticeable, but not overbearing like other brands can be. Like Skruf, the bergamot is accompanied by rose oil, rather than citrus or smoke. The rose oil is not as easily noticed as it is in Skruf Stark, but it is there. For a total of 60 minutes, I sat back and relished the cascade of flavors in my mouth. Knox truly is unique in every way, much like Swedish Match's Roda Lacket.
While the flavor profile of Knox is listed on paper as almost identical to Skruf Original, it is not. I want to say that the flavors are a bit more subdued than Skruf Original, which implies that there are less of them, and may account for the lower price. However, that may not be a bad thing. The juices don't run as badly as Skruf Original, which might otherwise irritate your stomach.
Knox continued to bear flavor well into an hour, but slowly tapered off towards the end. I removed the portion and sighed with satisfaction. In a world of flowery, salty, and bergamot drenched snus. The uniqueness of Knox was a welcome experience. I first tried Knox Portion during the Summer of 2008, and have enjoyed it ever since. However, the way a certain snus is perceived is different for all people, so take my review with a grain of salt.
All in all, I heartily recommend those of you who haven't tried Knox Portion to give it a go. For the price, and its totally unique flavor, it almost seems like you should be paying more. I certainly would.

I didn't like it when I first tried it, but as I got through the can it started to grow on me. I actually felt it was similar Ettan when I first tried it. But I ended up liking this whereas i don't like ettan. However, I do believe this product fits a certain profile that fans of ettan may enjoy.

Not the greatest but I like it because of the price. Not fun being a poor college student. When I get back into snussing this is the first snus I will be buying. My 2 cents.

so im a bit confused a bit about the taste. kinna sounds like its a mix of ettan and skruf? if so, this is what ive been looking for. and its ultra disgusting? mmm sounds wonderful, as skruf is the only snus that the taste never gets old to me. and i dont seem to like anything that tastes like general.

buy a ten pack?
I am not one much for variety. I have been getting ten packs of Roda Lacket white portions and am thinking of getting a ten pack of Knox because its got less tobacco so should be a little milder for me as regular portions sometimes overpower me ... I do like bergamot but have not had Knox for over a year and don't remember what it is like...

I learned a while ago to just shut up and see whats what before I say a word about a snus that is new to me. However I never listen to anyone including myself so here goes.
Initially Knox tasted very familiar to me and I thought it reminded me of something I love... After a minute I realized it was like Grov (which I hated) but the other half was Ettan. What I am saying is they pulled it off and I really like it as of now. If that changes no problem. Thats why there is an edit option.

I just finished off my first tin of Knox original portions and liked it a lot.....I actually burned through the tin very quickly. The easy comparison to make for Swedish Match users would be Grov, but not exactly. The flavor out front is tobacco for sure, but the more subtle flavors, a little salt and a little citrus added to a good medium/mild(er) tobacco is very nice. I couldn't taste any Rose oil, may have missed it, but I had a tin of Skruf op in rotation with the Knox and the Rose oil was present and tasty in the Skruf. I will probably order a 10 roll of this "value priced" snus and enjoy some more of it..... I may try the Stark version as well.
