    Smålands Brukssnus

Brukssnus is a value brand from Skruf. 35g tins at 10mg/g makes it kinda budget…price per gram is higher than it looks although the price per tin is low. If you’re chea-err…I mean frugal like me, this comes into consideration. For the same price per gram you could buy up, not too far, but up nonetheless.

Smells like…play doh, dark tobacco (think maduro humidor), and a touch of ammonia/windex upon first sniff. As I’ve gone through the in, less ammonia but really no stronger or development of a deep tobacco aroma. Still kinda play dohey. The snus is fluffy with a solid grind and holds together almost as good as the old v2 grind. It might not support the weight of a 92 Honda Civic, but it will get you there in one piece. This stuff ain’t sliding for over an hour, even with a larger pris.

The flavor is mild to start (almost nonexistent and not too salty. It does take a little bit to mature. As the flavor comes out, it is like putting a DeNobili cigar in your mouth and just chewing on the end of it, not lighting it (like Clint Eastwood). Not strong as the cigar or smoky per se, but more dry and fire cured tobacco. I think it really needs some zazz. It’s good, unobtrusive in smaller prillas, and kinda strong. It’s also kinda boring. I personally like a more rounded tobacco flavor or some sort of citrus/fruit,hay like top note. This is dark, tastes “dry” if that makes sense (like a spoon full of unsweetened dark cocoa powder, but on fire), and is kind of bitter…without any real brightness to counterpoint it.

Now I did test out the ol’ farmers pinch as well. Not my number one method, but I did it for science. Definitely smokier this way as soon as it gets in the lip, and dark and rough from the jump, but then mellows out before turning more to that fire cured/bitter cigar flavor.

As for the “fire-cured/smoke” flavor it does irritate my throat. It didn’t for the first few pinches, but it got pretty bad as I went through it…like I won’t finish this tin irritation. Not sure why, maybe it’s a function of the tobacco and not an added smoke flavor, or they use a different smoke flavor than the one that irritates me, or it is such a sturdy pris/pinch that I don’t get enough (or any) drip to bother my throat.

Sure is strong tho… The first time I used it I erred on the side of caution. The second time I used a “regular strength” size prilla with my morning coffee because I was having trouble getting the flavor development with a microprilla, and let me tell you what..heh, it’s a good thing I wasn’t in the car or I’d be selling it with a “shotgun blast stain” on the driver’s seat. This stuff hit hard and fast for 10mg/g…well for me at least.

Do I like it? Kinda but it hurts me like cheese and my ex-wife. If this was all that I could get I wouldn’t complain (yes I would). It is a good workhorse snus or “utility snus” as the name tells us…and it feels like a utility snus. Strong, one note…and it sure ain’t no Skruf.

Would I buy more? Nope. Besides the smoke, I don’t really like super dark cigars and the one note of the tobacco leaves a lot for me to be desired.

Did I mention it needs some zazz?
