I should get my Pioneer tomorrow. I am really hoping they haven't changed their recipe.

This is my first time trying Pioneer, but given that everyone notices the licorice/anise -- and that there's no mention of this in previous reviews -- does anyone think this batch tastes much different than the last?
If they're not adding this flavor, it could well be just high phenylpropene content (anethole, estragole), which is a component of tobacco itself, but which is also used as a "natural" agricultural fungicide.

After a very long wait to try this stuff out (see the "let down by Northerner" thread) - I can say that I agree that it's not tasting like pure unflavoured tobacco that I believed Pioneer to be. It tastes like a mild hint of caraway to my tastebuds - but it's so mild I might be wrong.
Caraway, dill and aniseed are all related herbs anyway with similar flavours. The phenylpropene idea from UsusalSnuspects is interesting and might also explain the dill flavour lots of people taste in Grov from Swedish Match.

Pioneer does seem as if they've changed the formula. I liked the original much better, it was a very earthy straight tobacco flavor. I tried another can very recently and didn't care for it and sent it to a friend ;-)

I recently tried my first can of loose snus. Which I thought it would be interesting to try Pioneer, since I heard good stories about it and SM products aren't available for us EU guys.
I have never tried loose snus before but I would like to share my thoughts about this one.
The snus is really easy to well 'bake'. I tried to make a small cilinder shape 'prilla' (As you guys call it) and it was really easy. I mean, it took like 15 seconds and my fingers were almost clean afterwards. So I guess that's a good thing right? It's not harsh on the gums either which I was afraid of at first.
The smell has an anice tone to it, which you can clearly taste. But it's not to overwhelming, like bad. (I'm not a huge van of licorice) I don't think I'm so much of a loose guy but this snus might be something to use on occasions. I'm not so good in describing flavours but it is good. It has a rich dark tobacco flavour to it. (As stated many times before.) It's something if you could get your hands on, worth trying.

I've been hearing reports of it being flavored with anis, and I find that disturbing. I like anis a lot, but I already have the best there is with Gotland's offering. I liked the older Pioneer with the plain taste. It was like Ettan, but better. I was happy to have a plain snus that wasn't SM. Hopefully they'll switch back, or maybe dual release them :^/
