Last week I wrote up a little preview for Kaliber Snus, the new snus announced by Swedish Match. Swedish Match said, "Swedish Match will be launching a modern, attractively priced alternative, Kaliber, to accommodate consumers who want high-quality low-priced snus. “Kaliber is a straightforward portion-packaged snus for price-conscious consumers who are unwilling to compromise on quality,” says Markus Eileryd, Product Manager for Kaliber. Kaliber will be available in stores in the week commencing on April 11, and in original and white portion formats. The products will be produced according to Swedish Match GothiaTek quality standard and will have a popular tobacco flavor with a hint of citrus."

In my preview of Kaliber I said, "Hopefully it'll be better than the last low priced snus I tried, Level, which wasn't that good.". Since original portions develop the flavor a bit quicker, I decided to review the original portion first, just so I could get a clear taste and smell of what Kaliber is truly all about. Interestingly, as soon as I opened the can, I immediately thought "LEVEL!" So much in fact I picked up the snusphone and contacted the president of the Level fan club who has been actively searching for a replacement since his beloved Level was discontinued and said, "Dude, you HAVE to try Kaliber." This may turn some of you off, but hey - I call it like I see it.

Upon opening the can a very strong citrus aroma came through along with a little sweet undertone. It kinda reminded me of Level crossed with the original recipe 1847. I reached for a portion and noticed quickly how moist they are as I put one into my mouth. After fluffing it a bit, I popped it in and quickly noticed it to have a very comfortable mouthfeel. The snus itself is very citrusy, not too much salt in the mix to speak of, a subdued dark tobacco/pepper taste in the background. It's alright, considering it's a low priced snus I'd imagine it'd do for people in a pinch, or for those who use a lot of snus and need to save money. Like I've said, it really hearkens to Level, and has a little presence of the old PMI 1847 in the mix.
In the end, what do I think? It's not bad. It has a pretty interesting taste to it. For a low priced snus, it's decent. For fans of the former PMI 1847 snus or Level, you may find you'll really enjoy this snus. To my friend CJ - this may be the one you've been looking for to replace your beloved Level!
