I love mint snus. I used to drive a few hours to where Triumph Mint was sold in Georgia to keep myself supplied. I drove down there about 4 months ago and I almost cried the whole way back as I used the last can they had in stock. A few months ago I heard that SM was testing a large white portion mint snus so I waited patiently, and waited, and waited AND waited until it was released and as soon as I could, ordered up some to give it a go.

I ordered the General Mint from Getsnus.com on Monday the 1st and it showed up on Thursday the 4th. Nothing unusual about that, nice prompt service as always.

Before I even get into the actual snus review, I wanted to share a picture of the bottom of the can. I don't think I have ever been as excited about a snus as this one after reading this:

Notice how it says distributed by General Cigar Company? That is most excellent news for us SM fans out there as General Cigar Company has a distribution network already set up in the states and adding snus to that network shouldn't be an issue. I don't have any insider information but as a businessman myself, it should be a no-brainer.

I will admit that I am disappointed that our snus won't come with kok salt anymore (just kidding, that's just table salt but it kept my friends from stealing my snus. I think the response I got from them is that they wouldn't put anything kok related in their mouths).

    On to the snus!

    Packaging:

Pretty standard SM cans, nothing out of the ordinary.

    The portions:

Again, nothing out of the ordinary. They are 0.9 gram portions (24 grams per can) and they are white portions so they are a bit dry. I do wish that they had put them in the nifty star formation that the General White's come in as it adds a certain elegance to the product (ok, it just looks cool!)

    Smell:

    MINT! Duh :P

    The portions themselves:

I absolutely love SM's white portions. They are like putting a soft pillow of tasty tobacco love between my lip and gums. Soft, sensual, well, maybe not sensual but they are comfy. Think of it as a snuggy for your baccy.

    Flavor:

MINT! again, duh! I find that they are very similar to Triumph Mint but not as harsh to your mouth. The one thing I find very similar to Triumph Mint is the during and after taste. On both I get a mint hit then it smooths out after about 30 minutes. I never get a hint of tobacco flavor, just mint through and through.

While I was hoping that it would be similar to Triumph Mint, I was actually surprised that it was as sweet as Triumph was. This is a sweet snus no doubt. I find that it is almost as sweet as Camel Frost, but not overpowering.

    Long term use?

It most certainly has a place in my rotation. I have used a few each day taking a break from my beloved Rape #2.

If you liked Triumph Mint, get this snus. If you like a sweet mint flavored snus, get this! Hell, even if you don't get it anyway and save it for a box pass. It will be great to see them transition to the General Cigar distribution system and the potential to see more snuses locally.

I too love mint snus and the larger white portion was, IMO, much needed.

As I have stated elsewhere on this site, if SM made the new larger size General white portion mint in ES, I think they would do some serious damage to Thunder Frosted. I was one of the people involved in the pre-launch sample group for the new size and flavor of General Mint. I made that recommendation then and I still think it's a good idea. BTW, I'm a hard core Thunder Frosted user.

All in all, this new white portion is part of my regular rotation and I usually pop one or two a day. Camel Frost should take note of this flavor and portion. If they did, maybe their product would gain more popularity and a stronger following in the snus community.

Us General Wintergreen users have known this for quite a long time.

This is a pretty good snus once in a while, but it really is very, very sweet. I taste alot of artificial sweetener, which kind of overpowers a very good mint taste. If this wasn't so sweet, it would be absolutely killer, but the sweetness makes it an occasional dessert snus for me. Ill order a can here and there, but I think Ill stick with my beloved General Wintergreen and Thunder Frosted. 3 stars.

BTW, why is this one stickied? :?:

A lot of people here would probably start trying to compare to other Swedish snuses because of the fact that it's a General product, but it's really in its own category. SM created this with the US market in mind, hence the sweetness, but still wanted it to be a quality product with a well balanced flavor. While I almost always snus General Loose or portions, this is a great dessert type snus. I typically use one every couple days as a kind of treat. It's not the type of snus i'd like to use on a daily basis, but occasionally i'll get a really strong craving for it and it'll hit the spot fantastically.
The flavor comes off as mint-only for the first 15-25 minutes, but mellows out and gives a more earthy flavor around the half hour mark. Citrus and bergamot start to emerge and intertwine nicely with the mint, but don't stay separate for long. I find they'll keep going for about an hour and a half, but after that they seem to loose most flavor and only exude an artificially sweetened mint aftertaste.

Perhaps it's my relatively unrefined palate (when it comes to snus, anyway), but I've never even remotely gotten a hint of citrus or bergamot with this snus...and I routinely keep a portion in for a little over 2 hours.

I think the mint often overpowers the other flavors if you aren't kind of looking for them, but if i've been using general loose and portions all day and then pop in a mint, after the mint flavor starts to die down I always get a citrusy backdrop coming through. Maybe I just have a weird palate, and if you don't taste it you just don't taste it, but one of the reasons I like general mint so much is the fact that the flavor evolves on my palate and provides an interesting experience for me.

That's cool. Maybe I'll be able to pick up on the subtleties of it further on down the road. I've only been snusing since September of '09. All I know at this point, is that I've found my go to snus in GMW.

I would keep getting the General Mini Mints for free and would use them when I wanted to be more subtle about using tobacco, so I thought I'd try out the new full sized General Mint. The full sized mint is a much more satisfying experience, in fact it is now in my regular rotation and I have been keeping plenty on hand. And it gives me nice fresh breath.

Like the General Wintergreen, there's not really any tobacco taste, but it is delicious. Though the flavor is strong, it is nothing at all like the rather grotesque American Camel snus.

As with all the other General snus I have tried, it is of very high quality. I would wish for this one (and the wintergreen) in a maxi size, but since they just discontinued the regular General Maxi, I think that will never happen.

I really like this one. It's a full size Mini Mint, which I loved the taste, just can't stand minis. I will say that it is not a suitable Triumph Mint replacement though. Triumph was more of a spearmint, this is more of a peppermint.

I'm gonna have to give a thumbs down on this one. This is to me is way overpowering. I reminds me of a large Camel Frost. No thank you.

Haven't had the chance to try the regular sized portions of General Mint yet, but I'm lovin' the Minis. I'll update this once I get a can of the bigger ones.

Huge win on the full size General Mint.
I live(ed) for the Wintergreen but after having gone through several cans of the Mint.... hard call which I prefer.

Both have a good mint burn soon after going under the lip.
Neither are overly sweet as the American SNUS tends to be.
Both deliver the nic in the gradual fashion that keeps me snussing with a smile.

Perfect mint snus without tasting like candy, the tobacco makes a mild appearance once the mint burn backs off a little.

General Mint. If you don't care for peppermint then don't bother with this one because it's got the peppermint covered very well!

Update to my earlier post -- Mint Large FTW!

The larger portions have a little more salt (I can't taste any salt at all in the Minis), but after about a week of salty snus, I'm starting to expect it. And there's a tiny bit of ammonia smell, but not nearly as strong as many other brands. But that great, not-too-sweet, full-bodied peppermint taste is the same, it just now has enough nicotine to satisfy along with it. It's not a snus to make you sit up and take notice, true. But it's good, reliable, long-lasting, and leaves your breath fresh. And many times simple and reliable is just the ticket. Being a confirmed peppermint lover, I plan to keep this in stock at all times.

Not bad but didn't Swedish Match just repackage their Catch Peppermint brand?
