General Silver for a new snusser friend?

In the last order I made, I threw in a can of the new-ish General Silver just to try it out. It is supposedly a lighter-tasting, 6mg portion. Since that order, I mentioned snus to a good friend who lives in my old home town several states away. He is working on getting off the cigs and has expressed interest in snus (he is also e-smoking as well, but he doesn't think it could ever work 100% for him). I am thinking about mailing him a can to let him try it out since I could likely just stuff it in an envelope and ship it pretty cheap.

But now my dilemma is that I think the General Silver would be a good one for him to try, but I am not sure as I have never tried it myself and I only have 1 can of it (of course I don't want to open it and try one). Getsnus was all out of General the last time I ordered, so I got a whole bunch of 01's. I know a lot of people don't like 01, but I love it and it is my #2 snus when General is sold out. I don't think that would be the best snus initiation since it is kind of an oddball snus.

So do you think the General Silver would be a good first-time snus? How much like General White portion or Regular is it? I am really wishing I had gotten 2 cans of it now!

It may turn your friend away from snus, since General Silver has a lower nicotine and pH level. I would actually recommend giving him a can of strong portions.

Really? When I started snussing, I was a chain smoker but I actually had to adjust to the level of nicotine in even regular snus (8mg * 25% absorption rate of oral tobacco = 2mg (2 "reds" cigarettes)). I have personally never used strong snus, and have no desire to do so.

What do other people think? It was my understanding that most smokers actually have to adjust up to the level of nicotine in snus (I know I did!)

The pH though I have no idea about. What is different with the Silver, and how does it affect the taste/mouthfeel/whatever else it affects?

you did say he was trying to quit smoking. It takes most new people time to adjust to the taste of snus, they stick with it because of the nicotine. If you give him a "light" version, he get's less nicotine and his chances of sticking with snus are less.

          Keep the silver for yourself.

It's hard to go with just 1 as a first snus; everybody has different tastes, but I think you could do worse than Onyx as a first snus. It's flavor has wide appeal, and it's a bit stronger than regular snus without getting into the ridiculous levels.

Well, I guess I also have to assume he would just be tossing in a portion for only 10 - 15 minutes, in which case the lower nic probably would be a problem (I have always left portions in around the clock, except for when I eat which may be why I don't like high nic. They are way too strong for constant snussing, at least for me).

I went ahead and tried it out and I am glad I didn't send it to him now. There is just something weird with this one. I am assuming it is the pH or something. It is like a cross between General and Oden Classic. Not great, but not miserable. Maybe I will order him a can of General Strong next order. It will just have to be a while because high taxes are making me order 2+ months worth at a time these days.

EDIT: Onyx sounds like a good nic level, but I always found the taste a bit odd. A little too citrusy for me. You say it seems to be popular with new snussers? I didn't try it until well into my first year snussing.

EDIT2: Blech, I took it out. General is my go-to snus, but this just doesn't do it for me. I will save it for a rainy day when my order is running late.

Onyx seems popular around here, and both me and my buddy at work liked it when it came in my first try out box. It's hard to say what any individual will like though. You name your most favorite snus, and someone won't like it. I've been snusing for 3 years now, and I'm just starting to come around to General snus. It still isn't a favorite by a long shot, but there's a niche it can fill for me. Point being, General's the worlds most popular snus, and I'm not crazy about it, and I know I'm not alone :^D

                  Get him some Ettan.

Ettan Los or Ettan Original Portion. He'll surely enjoy the rich tobacco taste.

                    ...or GROV

Actually, for a new snuser as described I'd prescribe Nick & Johnny's. The thing is, it takes some time to get used to snus. I think you're friend will do well 'cos he's ready to try something else. Maybe try a can of dip too. I know this might be a bit unorthodox, but the quicker nic hit and the fullness of flavor might actually help in the transition. Then the refined nature of snus will be more appreciated. Maybe it'll work...

Grov was probably my favorite snus from my first try out box. I saved it for nearly last thinking I wouldn't like a plain flavor snus, but it's really quite good.

When I quit smoking, I used Nick & Johnny Original Portion and Skruf Stark Portion. If he's a heavy smoker, I would even recommend Skruf Xtra Stark Portions.

Give him a tin of thunder frosted, Its worked well for several friends of mine. he'll be accustomed to the instant gratification and alleviation of nicotine withdrawal through a single puff of a cigarette, so you'll want something strong as he probably won't be using it as frequently or for as long a duration as I imagine most of us do.

Approaching 2 years of use, I still use starks along with regular strength snus. If I'm using general or typical 8mg snus exclusively, I'll typically chain snus. Starks I can use for 10-20mins and usually wait a period of time before needing another snus, or use them for a longer duration. Everyone I've given thunder to uses them for a short period of time until satiated, which is obviously quicker than regular strength.. Also the swallowing of tobacco juice will be a foreign concept so they'll likely appreciate something that tastes like mint.

I'd recommend giving him the General Silver and some Regular General
along with a strong type. You could mix a few types in one can as
                            I did.

Not everyone is the same. The guy I sent the General Regular to puked
on it. He had to start with mini mint.

I started with General and Skruf Regular portion along with the Stark
and Extra Stark of these brands. I've gone over 5 months without a
                            single cig.

Thank you all for your guidance.

If he is trying to quit smoking or even interested in trying to quit, I would recommend giving him Nick & Johnny for a first time snus, It is what I was first given and tried and I was also a chain smoker. I decided after a few portions to order a variety of strengths and flavors because it seemed to work since it had 12mg. I wouldn't have him try a mint type snus at first unless he is a menthol smoker, And the general Onyx has too strong of A flavor for your 1st snus, But is now my favorite. When I first tried N&J I thought it kinda tasted like earl grey tea.. Ettan would also be a good 8mg choice with it's chocolate/nutty tones

I wouln't recommend sending him a few types mixed in one can as the flavors can mix. Send a few in seperate cans the 2 I just recommended would be a great start IMO...
