    45 grams???

I just received a roll of goteborg's loose yesterday and noticed they only contain 45 grams of snus per can now. When the hell did this start? We're being shorted one whole can of snus per roll.

IIRC, it started right around the time that the swedish tax-hike occured. Not sure if this is the reason why, but I would assume that by mildly decreasing the weight of the snus, they are able to sell it in a lesser tax bracket. Anyone able to correct or verify this statement?

Yeah, this came up in another thread - all of the loose tins have gone to 45g. I haven't gotten one of the new ones yet, but I'm keen to measure the weight when I do.

My hypothesis for the change has to do with the new taxes, which seemed to coincide with the change. I suspect that Swedish law, like most others, has some degree of tolerance (usually about 10%) between what is labelled on the package and what is actually in the package. This is to allow for production variation while protecting the consumer from scamming companies (selling 20g but putting 40g on the label, etc).

What I expect Swedish Match, and others, did is not so much revamp their entire production process for a paltry 5g switch, but simply down-label the tins as much as was allowed by law. If they put 50g in and call it 45g then nobody will complain and they are still following the law. They will, however, only have to charge tax on 45g of snus rather than 50g. Cheeky, if that's what they've done. Thinking of the consumer, eh.

I haven't weighed the snus but you can tell by looking that's it's definitely NOT filling the can like it used to.

True, the cans don't seem to be filled to capacity like they used to.

On a more positive note, the cans of Gotlands I got about two or three weeks back are still marked as being 50 grams. The cans are also filled to capacity, as they should be.

But oh well. I haven't noticed any real difference in the speed with which I go through a can.

After opening my first 45g tin of Probe Lös it looks not as if 5 full grams were missing, more like 1 or 2 grams. But maybe that's just wishful thinking and I also don't have a reliable scale to test it.

            Cheers!
