I am a new snus user, but all I know of snus is Camel snus in Oregon, I have been using about 2 tins a week and am going to be placing my buysnus.com order soon. As someone who knows nothing of Swedish snus, can someone let me know what the difference is between regular and white portion snus?
White vs regular portion

Have a look at http://www.buysnus.com/snus.aspx.
Basically, the original portions are moist and the pouch material soaked with the moisture from the pris inside. They give a good immediate nicotine kick and you can feel the flavour right away. They can start to run rather quickly (i.e. produce tobacco juice with a pretty intense taste).
The white portions are produced in a way that keeps the pouch material dry, and the snus inside seems to be less moist. This means that they take a while to get started, and both nicotine and flavour is released more gradually. They tend to run less and take longer to start running.
I like both myself, but with some exceptions (GR#2) I find myself enjoying original portions more for that instant gratification when I am not working on my loose skills. Loose is a very different experience from the portions. Altogether much more pleasant once you stop panicking about the ball of peat under your lip.

New snuser here too. Grab a combo/sampler box and try a little of both kind and make your call. My cajones kinda shrunk when I found out that mostly ladies prefer the white portion. So far I enjoy it more, but previously I mistakenly used skoal pouches/bandits as snus which were far moister than the Swedish moist snus btw. Once I get the memories of that nasty stuff out of my mind I may prefer the original as it does have more of a flavor to it.
Isn't it amazing that so many people have tried american made stuff and then decided they wanted to try the source.. and never turn back? I see myself being a Tre Ankare man for quite a while

I wouldn't say white vs dry portion is a chick vs guy thing so much - minis are definitely something preferred by women, simply because they are more discrete, but otherwise I've seen burly Swedes break out a can of Grov white portions in a bar without a second thought. I mean, Tre Ankare is about as guy-themed a snus as you can get (gay sailor jokes aside, of course  ) and it's only available as a white portion. It's mostly a matter of personal taste, I think. Portions in general are more geared towards the modern person - guy or girl - who wants something neater which you can tote around to the office or to dinner without having to farmer/lumberjack it with loose tobacco. I guess, in that context, white portion definitely don't have as powerful a smell, so you could take them to "more posh" places than you might feel comfortable doing with regular portions and still be able to open the tin without ranking out the room with snus, erm...aroma

Zero's logic is dead-on. Think of it as a "time and place" thing. If much of your use will be in public, so to speak, and that "public" isn't construction workers, then white or dry is the way to go. Believe me that the Wise 6mg dry whites will knock you as flat as anything being sold. If that's what you want, have at 'em.
Now ask yourself this: If you were on the board of an American tobacco company, and you saw diminished profits ahead from your major product (cigarettes), what would you do? I'd diversify. To what? Smokeless tobacco. But at all costs avoid any redneck chew-and-spit image for your new product. That won't sell to 40 million cigarette smokers here. It's disgusting, in fact. Chew belongs to history, not tomorrow.
Which brings you to snus. Neat product, widely used in a modern country without health consequences. Perfect. But I'd avoid all "loose" snus because it smacks of dip tucked under the lip. Dry, white is the way to sell this product to uneasy Americans seeking a way off cigs. I think that's why we see the Camel and Marlboro and Skoal Dry products being introduced as "snus", packaged only in clean, dry, white portions. No smell. No special handling. No jargon to learn about "baking" a "pris." No discolored teeth. No obvious signs of being an addict.
All I can say is thank God for the Internet and online ordering. I don't have high expectations for decent snus products from the likes of R.J. Reynolds anytime in the near future. Maybe a Baby Ruth candy snus, but that's innovation for them. What I do expect is that they'll throw in the towel and eventually buy all the Swedish snus makers for obscene prices, then raise the sales price per tin.
