    nicotine snus and cigarettes

    Hy guys!
I just read some thread about how much nicotine you are able to absorb.
If I'm not wrong, you can absorb maximum 10-15% from the snus's nicotine.

So if you put in your mouth one gram of strong loose snus, u'd absorb about 1.5-2mg of nicotine.
How does it work with cigarettes? I mean, a cigarette has (e.g. red marlboro) 0.8mg of nicotine but if u read on wiki about nicotine you find "an average cigarette yields about 1 mg of absorbed nicotine".

I think it's impossible to absorb more nicotine than the amount that is in the cigarette.
Let's say you absorb 100% nicotine from cigarettes.
Let's say your portion of strong loose snus is 2g (is it feasible?), so you get 4mg of nicotine.

Thus, I'd say a portion of strong snus is equal to 5 cigarettes.

    Do you agree?

PS: I prefer not to write about PH, cuz i don't want to complicate the matter.

I don't know the science behind nicotine absorption and snus... All I know is, the snus is just as (if not more) satisfying than a cigarette.

I haven't had a single craving for a smoke since I started. In fact, when I start to get a nicotine craving, I'm not craving a cigarette... I'm craving a snus (these General Mints are tasty).

Snus is a miracle. If only more smokers knew about this stuff. Got to spread the word!

Well said. I was a 2 pack a day smoker for 26 years and now haven't had 1 cigarette in 18 months and don't miss it a bit. Snus is the perfect replacement for me.

No .... A portion of extra strong snus or one gram equals to roughly 2 cigarettes ...

It might give you a stronger kick than just 2 cigarettes, but the nicotine intake isn't higher than you would get from 2 strong cigarettes (2.4mg nicotine)

To be honest I don't get any type of 'kick' from smoking anymore ... after smoking 16 years.

10 - 15% maximum is absorbed from snus into the bloodstream. That means 1.6 grams of nicotine is absorbed from an extra sterk snus (los/portion) ... that's the strongest snus ...

            Hope that helps.

Probably your nicotine tolerance is very low...

Try giving an extra sterk snus to someone that isn't a smoker or nicotine addict of any sort...

I've done that once with one of my friends and he could barely speak or pay attention to anything and suddenly went to trough up...

The nicotine stays in your blood longer w/ snus too.

More nicotene, less harm, more flavor.

The choice is obvious. The nicotene isn't what kills you anyways, it's all that other crap that's in cigarettes, coupled with the fact you are combusting carbon and then inhaling it while it's still hot.

I quit smoking several months ago. I still smoke on occasion, but I usually find that cigarettes are unable to fill my nicotine craving and I'm reaching for snus immediately afterwards. For that reason I find it a general waste of time to bother smoking at all.

Yep the carbon monoxide is what's killing when smoking...

By the way, a lot of people are falsely informed that nicotine develops cancer...

                    Here's something on Wikipedia ..

Whilst 60 mg of nicotine can kill you, it's simply not carcinogenic.

The carcinogenic properties of nicotine in standalone form, separate from tobacco smoke, have not been evaluated by the IARC, and it has not been assigned to an official carcinogen group. The currently available literature indicates that nicotine, on its own, does not promote the development of cancer in healthy tissue and has no mutagenic properties. However, nicotine and the increased cholinergic activity it causes have been shown to impede apoptosis, which is one of the methods by which the body destroys unwanted cells (programmed cell death).

Yeah if you smoke a cigarette faster and inhale more frequently and deeper, hold it in longer etc. you get more nicotine like up to 2mg. That was why light cigarettes didn't improve people's health they took larger drags and inhaled it deeper much of this was done subconsciously. Snus nicotine content to me is who cares if your not satisfied just use another portion or make a bigger pris and keep it in for at least 30 minutes.

i mean that smoking cigarettes doesn't give me any kick at all but 2 grams of strong snus does.
Just to be sure, I tried to smoke deeply 2 red Marlboro together and I didn't feel anything (and in my whole life I've smoked maximum 20-25 cigarettes).

I'm pretty sure that you cannot absorb all the nicotine that is inside the cigarette.

Where can i get further info?

                          Here's something from SwedishMatch.com

Important research results on Swedish snus:

                          * Less than half the amount of nicotine present in a pinch of snus is extracted during snus use.
                          * Only 10-20 % of the nicotine present in a pinch of snus is absorbed via the mucous membrane and reaches the systemic circulation. This means that only 1-2 mg of nicotine is absorbed into the blood from a one gram pinch containing ca 10 mg of nicotine.
                          * Nicotine is absorbed quite rapidly from Swedish snus.
                          * Studies on Swedish snus users have shown that the plasma steady-state levels of nicotine and its main metabolite, cotinine, are similar in Swedish snus users and cigarette smokers.
                          * Snus users and cigarette smokers, who have similar blood nicotine levels, have reported similar levels of subjective dependence on tobacco.
                          * The total nicotine uptake (dose) measured as the excretion of nicotine and its metabolites per 24 hours is similar in habitual snus users and cigarette smokers, i.e. 25 mg.
                          * In contrast to cigarette smokers, snus users do not compensate their nicotine uptake when switching to a low nicotine product. A decrease of the nicotine content of snus by 50 % results in a decrease of the nicotine uptake by about 50 %.
                          * An experimental cross-over study of blood plasma levels obtained after controlled snus use of four different portion-packed snus products of various weight and format, different nicotine content and different pH values showed that the nicotine intake varies between 0.4 and 1.2 mg per pinch.

Basically that means if you're a can a day user of loose snus you'll absorb roughly 54mg of nicotine into the bloodstream which equals to two packs of cigarettes.
