I weighed the new 45g snus tins. The answer is (Updated 4-1)

Well I decided to test out the weight of the new 45g snus tins to see if they actually contain 45g of snus and not 50g anymore. Well I first grabbed a fresh tin of General out of the freezer and grabbed my digital scale. I weighed the whole tin and it weighed 62.1g or around there (sorry it was yesterday when i did it and i dont remember exactly. I do remember it being about 12g over 50g though). Next I grabbed an empty tin of General that i had and weighed it on the scale. It weighed exactly 12.1g. So now I figured I would double check my findings so i took the snus out of the new tin and placed it on the scale. It weighed 49.9g.

So according to my findings the package has just been relabeled and we are still receiving 50g of snus in our tins (atleast with General that is, I can not say for any other brands as of yet). I thought this was a very interesting find and am pretty pumped that the Snus companies actually care about their customers and our willing to keep giving us the same amount.

So all comments are welcome. What do you guys think?

Also I will try to weigh some other brands as I open a new tin and I will place my findings up on the board for you guys.

Hmm...that's odd. Why would they go to a 45g tin, then give the same amount of snus. To allow more $'s/grams due to the rise of customers overseas and specifically in the U.S., maybe? 5 grams on every tin adds up quite rapidly when you're talking about several tins per order. It's just my opinion. There could be many other valid reasons. For there to be a lighter tin and the same amount of snus contained could only mean good things, right?

I think it was done due to new tax laws, or something along those lines. Something like 50 g or more was at one tax level, and under was another..... If they had butt-loads of 50 gram tins waiting for delivery, they could re-label them as 45 g without sanction or fine, and still be in compliance with the law

Right. I was thinking it was something of that nature. Something with money. Maybe I could e-mail buysnus.com and get some answers.

Erik i think you are right. Basically just re-label the tins to say 45g instead of 50g to not get fined. Im just glad I am still getting 50g and not 45g in my tins. If they were 45g a tin then every ten tins you would lose 1 tin. It plays in the customers favor, which shows how great the snus companies are, especially compared to the damn American tobacco companies who try to milk every cent they can from the customer.

I Should be opening a new tin by tomorrow if not tonight and I will post up my findings with whatever new brand i try and see if it is consistent. Ill try to get some information on other companies besides Swedish match in the future also to see if they are doing the same thing. Long live snus!

I say a round of applause for swedish match for finding a way around the swedish tax laws and still giving their customers a fair shake!
Thanks for doing the test too, great info.

Aha, as I suspected - a cheeky switcheroo on the label was all it was. Kudos to Swedish Match!

there has never been exsactly 50g or 40g in snus tins.
the problem here is the high content of water in snus.

temprature, how fresh it is and all lot of other factors decide how
heavy the tin ends up being.

You could end up saving money on snus orders too since freight price is determined by weight/grams, too....right? Either way, its a no lose situation for the customer so, kudos to SM and any others doing this. I wonder if shipping costs will be altered due to this 50g to 45g adjustment? 5 grams less per tin will add up.

Well I forgot to do the test on my last tin of Gustavus, but did remember to just do it now with my new tin of Knox I just opened.

The tins says 45g on it. The weight of the snus alone without tin is 42.7g. Tin alone weighs 11.4g and combined they weigh 54.1g.

Now I double checked these and thats what I got. Not sure why. Let me know what you guys think.

Ill keep trying to update this thread as I open up new tins. Usually about every 2-3days. If anyone else does their own testing please post it up in this thread. The more information the better.
