Ask yourself, who are the bigger scumbags? Big suit CEOs, whose means are justified if it means more profits, or the elected government?

            This is from wikipedia

Nicotine is an alkaloid found in the nightshade family of plants (Solanaceae) that constitutes approximately 0.6–3.0% of the dry weight of tobacco,[1][2] with biosynthesis taking place in the roots and accumulation occurring in the leaves. It functions as an antiherbivore chemical with particular specificity to insects; therefore nicotine was widely used as an insecticide in the past,[3][4] and currently nicotine analogs such as imidacloprid continue to be widely used. Nicotine is also found in several other members of the Solanaceae family, with small amounts being present in species such as the Eggplant and Tomato.
In low concentrations (an average cigarette yields about 1 mg of absorbed nicotine), the substance acts as a stimulant in mammals and is the main factor responsible for the dependence-forming properties of tobacco smoking. According to the American Heart Association, nicotine addiction has historically been one of the hardest addictions to break, while the pharmacological and behavioral characteristics that determine tobacco addiction are similar to those that determine addiction to drugs such as heroin and cocaine.[5]
It's even one of the hardest addictions to break, even in it's pure state. I don't doubt there are not other addictive substances in the cigarettes, that explains the nasty withdrawal when turning from smoking to smokeless tobacco.

I suspect that if a completely nicotine free tobacco were available that the ditficulty of quitting it would be wildly less than the standard stuff.

Update: Oh sure there are a number of nicotine free tobacco-like products out there, snus included, but why anyone would use them is a mystery to me.

I never had a problem switching from smoking to snus. I actually had more problems when i ran out of snus and had to get my nic from smoking.

                    HA!
                    Nicotine is not addictive...
Thats sounds just like Nixon when he said "I am not a crook"

as far as heroin goes......there are people that do it all the time [daily] and they say they aren't addicted. so it has to be safe

                    just sayin
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I killed because they were annoying......

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

Same here. I didn't have any withdrawal symptoms or cravings when switching. In essence, it's easier to switch from cigarettes (with nicotine) to snus (with nicotine) than to switch from snus to nothing.

Yeah ironically heroin doesn't have many negative health effects other than addiction if it's pure, the main problems come from overdosing and injecting impurities into your blood stream it used to be fairly prevalent for people in britain to smoke opium and heroin was marketed as a cure for opium addiction which was of course like marketing vodka as a cure for beer, opium was marketed as a cure for alcoholism and worked fairly at reducing symptoms of spousal abuse and anti-social behavior (it was also cheaper than alcohol like pennies a day which helped the success).

                            Bottom line -

                            Nicotine is addictive

Stay away from any addictive substance!

Sometimes from women and gambling too
