Growing your own tobacco, making your own snus.

Anyone know what the law states with regards to growing your own tobacco in Michigan? I have seen a few people from Michigan, have any of you grown your own tobacco? Any problems? I read that you might need a permit. Anyone know if it certain varieties will grow in Michigan? Where would I get seeds? I know it is a little off topic but I would like to know since I found very little so far on the internet. My dad sent me pictures of a friend that was growing tobacco. Looked like something I would like to try since I am an avid gardener.

Well, being as it is, southwestern MI has decent soil, and I can't see anyone giving you much trouble growing tobacco w/out a permit (as long as were weren't talking acres, or a tremendous amount). A few decent sized plants would probably go ignored.

I've always wanted to try my hand at growing some tobacco, but aside from growing it, there's the storing, aging, curing, and drying. Growing seems to be among the easiest of the tasks. Seems like a lot of work, but I would say it's possible.

Unfortunately, I don't have any leads on obtaining seeds / seedling for growing, but the 'net is a wide and spectacular place. I know it's available on here somewhere. Good luck!

    Cheers,

    Erik

I did find more information: It seems the UK has or is going to pass a law to tax people that grow their own tobacco for personal consumption. This may be the same for the EU. Anyone know? With regards to the US, it is legal to grow your own tobacco, at least from what I have read. Here is some interesting sites that I looked at:

this one has over 30 or so varieties of seeds along with a short description of US law. I think it may be a great resource. Am I the only one who has thought about grow it? http://www.virtualseeds.com/tobacco-main.html

This site with a forum is for tobacco smokers. It seems to have quite a large following. http://www.coffinails.com/

Seems if you can grow tomatoes you can grow tobacco. So why are not more people interested in doing it?

I think tobacco would be tough to grow correctly. I imagine just about anyone could get a plant to come up, but to grow some with the appropriate qualities and flavor could be very tricky. Tobacco flavor varies by species, and by growing environment. Getting the right species is easy enough, but you're kind of at the mercy of nature, and geography for the environment.

By growing your own tobacco, you're stealing money from millions of hardworking people in the tobacco industry. I hope there will be tons and tons of laws and rules and taxes in the land of the free to deter people from harming our nations proud and vital businesses.

            ?????
            whoa there.
i don't know if you're joking or not, but if not that's one of the most ridiculous things i've heard.
why not outlaw anything DIY to 'protect' the businesses? that's the kind of crap that makes a ridiculous product for every little thing and makes people dumber and more dependant on money to get through life.
don't bake your own cookies, don't invent any new products, don't send emails..
after all, there's businesses that will suffer from those actions.
make sure the giants stay giants and everything stays stagnant.

there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with self sufficiency..there will always be business for those who can't make their own stuff, which is a lot since few of us have the resources or the time to farm tobacco or whatnot... which of course comes from the surplus over personal use from the people who do make their own stuff. what do you think started the proud and vital businesses in the first place? competition is key in keeping quality on the rise.
if i make my own stuff but turns out to be not worth the work i put into it, i'm a buyer. if i make my own stuff and it turns out to be much better than what i buy, you lost a customer. boo hoo. free market. if they can't keep up, oh well. that's the nature of the beast and it's up to them to provide a product of quality that compels a person to see the clear difference in practicality to buy instead of make something themself. otherwise it's like some type of communism or something.

sound like anything BUT the land of the free to have tons and tons of laws and taxes mate.

On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd say the odds of that being a joke is a 9.

                Ain't THAT the truth!
When the whole world goes to sh*t because the greedy banksters worldwide miscalculated this bubble, then we better know how to grow our own stuff and barter.
I'd wager someone with medical skills, agricultural skills and DIY weaponry will be in a position to live like a king (relatively speaking).

If you can't grow tomatoes you can't grow tobacco. Screw Sibera.
