it was this kind of tobacco product that was followed soon after by Skoal and Copenhagen.

I have a few different types of these and they center around the early 1900's. Between 1910 and 1920 actually. :-)

Skoal is actually the newer of the two. Copenhagen was first created about the same time that Ettan was created in Sweden, about 1822, by a man named George Weyman in Pittsburgh, PA. He actually created it to go up against Nasal snuff. :-)

Up until a few years ago, Copenhagen was partly manufactured in Franklin Park, IL, Just outside Chicago. In the 20's, 2 major tobacco manufacturers were in Chicago making dry snuff and smoking tobacco and I believe this can's brand was made by August Beck & Co. They were one of the largest that created Swedish types of smokeless tobacco under the Anchor family of brands.

I have a can of Seal Snus from the early 1900's. This topic makes me wonder: why did Americans (in the early 1900's) put in effort to create dip instead of replicating Swedish Snus? If Americans simply recreated snus, dip wouldn't exist and Swedish brands of snus would be all over America. I wish that were the case.

Eh they would have almost disappeared though the only people that dipped before all the skoal ads and marketing were loggers and coal miners and most of them lit up right after they were done. A lot of people switched from chewing tobacco to dip not sure why really. I think one of the reasons smoking wasn't as popular in sweden was that they weren't involved in WWII all of the countries involved developed an astronomically high male smoking rate and later female rate.
