UPDATED Swedish Match takes battle against British American Tobacco.
Swedish tobacco company Swedish Match To use the brand name Long to their products in Sweden. But now the company has encountered a problem.
Tobacco giant British American Tobacco (BAT) which are listed on the London Stock Exchange, has the right to name Long in Sweden through its Norwegian subsidiary. Patent and Trademark Office believes that Long may be confused with BAT's trademark and therefore prohibits the Swedish company that registered the name.
- We are confident that this will be lifted. There are investigations that show that the use has been made as appropriate in order to maintain the brand, "says Håkan Borg Pour in the law firm Lindahl as the agent for Swedish Match.
Swedish Match's main argument is that British American Tobacco has used the mark for five years in Sweden. A trademark can not be passive, more than five years before it could be revoked.
Swedish Match is now taking up a court battle. The company has sent a summons to the Stockholm District Court and claims that British American Tobacco, Swedish Match's limited ability to sign Long to Sweden.
- BAT is quite clear that this time shift is and that Swedish Match has had to act in this way. We expect that an agreement will.
Now to the Swedish tobacco company to the Stockholm District Court highlights the Norwegian BAT's trademark. British American Tobacco will also pay the Swedish Match's own costs, said Castle Rock and his partner Cathrine Blom Hammer Sandberg
In a press release from September 22, 2010 presented Swedish Match additional to its snuff classic brand with Long. The name alludes to make it taste more and last longer.
–We believe that when this action is completed, it will mark barrier will not exist and then is there any problem in this product on the market for Swedish Match's part.
British American Tobacco has not yet submitted any documents to the courthouse.
Footnote: This article was updated after the original publication to clarify that the Swedish Match operates a lawsuit against BAT's Norwegian subsidiary. British American Tobacco has its headquarters in the UK.

Now all we need is a translation of the translation to make some sense out of it.
For some reason some of the 'facts' in this story seem bass-ackwards!!

Does this mean V2's products are harmful or what? Sounds like a trick from SM's side. Bah... big companies...
Although I can think SM's products contain less 'bacteria' (or whatever) than V2's products, so sure, I can buy that. But I don't think it's something alarming. SM is probably exaggerating to make V2-fans switch to their products.

Swedish Match went to the patent office to register the name long and the patent office turned them down.
BAT owns the trademark on the word long.
Swedish Match is bitching that BAT hasn't used their trademark in over 5 years so they should forfeit the name long.
Swedish Match expects BAT to reimburse them for court costs.
BAT hasn't filed papers yet so we don't know what their position is.

So waste money in a legal battle when you could easily just call it General Sterk Extended or something? Money to burn I suppose.
I use Frosted long and Thunder wintergreen almost exclusively these days. I think SM is just pissed because V2 can make mint flavors taste good without obvious artificial sweetner tastes and SM can't.

would i buy v2 products if they dried out dog crap and added flavorings to it? no, but they aren't, they are making a quality product at a good price and seem to care greatly about their customers opinion considering the thunder test packs and their willingness to try new flavors. do i think that their snus may have higher levels of bacteria and chemicals, very good chance. but i also believe that it is well within limits and poses no more harm than most any other snus on the market. just my 2 cents...

Since Pact, I've lived off of V2 snus. Specifically, Offroad OP which, I quite like. If not for V2, I could not afford the habit anymore. It's reasonably priced and I've never had issues with V2 about quality. In my opinion, this is big guy picking on little guy.
