    Building tolerance to Extra Starks

I've been snusing for almost one year now and I still can't tolerate extra sterks .... I can have as much as 20 portions or half a can of normal loose snus a day but extra starks are just too strong....

sometimes I even feel sick from them....

How much did it take to build tolerance for you guys using strong portions...

I love the flavor and would have them daily, lol

It only took me about a week. I smoked over 2 packs a day though so I needed a lot of nicotine to make me not crave a cigarette. I was fine with Jaks the first day and Thunder only bothered me if I chain snused it. I wouldn't worry about it. I will eventually want to reduce my portions to at least regulars maybe even minis at some point. You don't want to end up where I'm at. I have a bunch of cans of regular portions sitting in the freezer because it takes a stark to satisfy my nicotine needs. I used to order regular portions for in between strongs. Now I see that its a waste for me. I just got an order from UPS 14 different kinds of snus. Only 4 are regular strength and thats because they are loose.

Strong (really, anywhere from 11mg [General ONYX] to 14mg) is good for me. No nausea, and satisfies my nicotine cravings. Regular strength portion snus was good, too, but it was much like the relationship I had with regular nicotine cigarettes vs. lights -- I'd smoke more lights over a 24-hour period than I would regular cigarettes.

The only extra strong snus I've tried is General Ekstra Sterk, and while I love General, it's too much for me. No current plans of ever switching to an extra strong snus, and I've been on-and-off for about three years now.

I think people overplay the effects of nicotine, and what strength snus they should use. I virtually chain smoked handrolled American Spirits, and I did fine with standard snus, as did everyone else who joined the site around the time I did. Extra stark snus is a gimmick designed to shackle you to the tobacco companies. Don't fall for the scam.

That wasn't necessarily directed at you. It's the general thought people have that says I smoked x cigarettes, so I NEED extra stark snus. Cigarettes don't comes much stronger in the west than what I was using. Aside from the lack of filter, the tobacco was stronger than is typically used.

The only real stark that was around when I started snus was Skruf and N&J, and couple that were a bit stronger than average, but not exactly starks. I quit smoking cigarettes, as did everyone else at that time. I don't think I'm being too cynical thinking the snus companies are pleased with the extra stark releases. That chains the user much tighter to them , and makes cutting down, or quitting that much harder. Don't forget for a second that Swedish Match is big tobacco. They're exactly the same as RJR and Altria, and have the same motivations and end goals as their American counterparts.

I got a tolerance to Extra sterks very quick, my third order was excluvily sterks/extra sterks, and I had the problem of weening my self off of them. I did have the nausia, and headaches from them, but I had to tolerate it so that I could get a buzz. I've learned my lesson now

It took me about a day. I prefer anything from 8-11mg but I opened up my first can of Thunder yesterday. The first portion made me feel extremely light headed. Now it's the 2nd day and they don't seem to really have any great effect on me. I get the buzz, but no unwanted side effects. I have no plans on permanently switching to sterks but they are good once in a while. I love this Thunder Frosted though, so I may order some of the mini portions.

I still get lightheaded with some sterks as well. Generally I use mostly sterks throughout the day (anywhere from 12-16mg/g), although lately I have been using regular portions/los in between sterks. I think a lot of it has to do with the pH and free nicotine available as well... for example I tried Thunder berry for the first time the other day and it hit me like a truck, but then I use Thunder frosted quite often (which has the same nicotine content) and don't seem to get nearly the same feeling. The berry just seems to be getting absorbed much more rapidly for me where as the frosted has a nice slow onset in terms of the nicotine buzz. I guess it just depends on a lot of different factors, for me at least.

I started out on regular portions but went up to stronger portions/los after I realized that the regulars alone weren't doing it for me. I could ween myself off to lower strengths and I probably will, but for now I'm sticking with a mix. I suppose it might have something to do with how I smoked as well, sometimes I would smoke and other times I would chief, smoking a whole cig in under a minute or two. YMMV I suppose.

Couldn't have said it better. After 4 years of snus I still can't take more than two or three in a day. For the first year I think I didn't even try them...the nicotine beast scares me. I went from a can of Grizzly per day and a half to 8 or so 8mg portions with no problem whatsoever. I like the sterks but I limit them. Mr. N is a very good friend of Mr. Brownstone so be careful.

I pretty much moved to strong snus as soon as I found out about it (maybe a week or two after I started snusing) without having smoked before. I don't recall ever having felt sick but oddly enough after using 02 portions for say, a day, and then having a Skuf Xtra Sterk that same day I would feel a bit ill from it. However, noramlly using Skruf Xtra Sterk I don't feel ill. Now I think you are talking about Loose snus and I haven't had the pleasure of trying loose Xtra Sterk yet but I have some on order. Since it's been about two weeks since my last snus and I just recieved some yesterday my tolerance actually diminished a bit and I was able to get a nic hit with just regular loose (Bla) so I'm hoping to ease my way up to Xtra Sterk this time instead of jumping straight to it and gaining a tolerance sooner.
Like I said, I have only had portioned Xtra Sterk so maybe I wont be able to tolerate loose but time will tell.

Maybe that was it (^). Maybe you tried a different one that day and it felt odd, but if you have another it wont be so bad. . . Just a thought.

Onyx would make me feel sick if I used it too late at night. I routinely lie in bed with snus in, and for some reason I'm more susceptible to nicotine late at night, and early in the morning. I don't know if it still affects me that way, but it might. I have to be careful with Gellivare products in the morning. If I make the pris too big, I'll feel half sick. Mid day is fine, but it kicks my ass n the morning.

I personally don't tolerate Extra Sterks well, makes me sick to me stomach and brings a possibility of a headache. When I quit smoking I opted to go with strong portions around 11-14mg of nicotine per portion. Well now it is a pain to ween myself over to regular portions as I have that nagging feeling that 8mg isn't enough. As of right now I am pushing myself along with it as I have a freezer with a bunch of regular portions that I fear I will end up giving away or chain snus trying to ween myself. I need to get myself down to a regular portion as my local shop decided to continue carrying General products, nothing Sterk though so its either buy on-line and pay out the arse in taxes or go to my local shop and get regular portions.
