I have absoloutely no idea and I've no idea how to find out. I used to feckin work for Customs but that was on the drug dogs. 8 years ago now so I can't remember a thing.
I think if you pay fees up front you're ok. I'll have to find out how to do that.

The revised rates of duty are:
        • cigarettes: an amount equal to 16.5 per cent of the retail price plus £154.95 per
        thousand cigarettes;
        • cigars: £193.29 per kilogram;
        • hand-rolling tobacco: £151.90 per kilogram; and
        • other smoking tobacco and chewing tobacco: £84.98 per kilogram.
        holy shit !!

I don't think so. I am pretty sure it would just apply to the weight of the tobacco. If you bought 500 grams of los (one roll) that would come to .5 kg.

OK I am coming up with about $136.00 for 2 rolls of snus. (OUCH!)

It's per kilo - that's a fair amount of tobacco.

Surely by declaring, all we're paying is the UK VAT rate.

I'll phone the National Advice helpline.

For importing into the EU, there are minimum thresholds below which duty is waived. Duty is not charged if either:
              • the total value of the goods (not including shipping charges or insurance) does not exceed £135 (€150, or equivalent in local currency)
              • or the amount of duty payable on any given item, does not exceed £9 (€10, or equivalent in local currency).
Neither duty nor VAT is payable if the total value of the goods (not including shipping charges or insurance) does not exceed £18 (€22, or equivalent in local currency).
So - given that people in the UK would benefit from no VAT which effectively halves the price of the snus, we can put in a couple of orders under this £18 and it should come out in the wash at roughly the same price.

              I'll check.

So, going on tax free tins of General Long Sterk from Northerner's US warehouse @ £2.81/tin it looks like as long as I order no more than 6 I would be ok?

                  Right chaps -

If I order 8 tins of Thunder Frosted - that's the UK equivalent of £17. With shipping it's £22 in total. Now THAT IS NOT AT ALL BAD WOOOOOOHOOOOOOO!!!!!

We need to make sure before we do this. Will anybody double check to see if I've missed something as I was effectively up at 04.00 this morning.

Just a quick input for those in EU.

Look for a cheap flights in advance, from many places it´s possible to fly cheaply to Sweden or even Copenhagen.

Here´s just an example from London Gatwick to Stockholm and back for 1072 SEK incl. all taxes and fees on may 11th 2011. You would arrive 13:00 and depart at 18:20

This is example is with return flight the same day so no hotel costs either, and you get about 4 hours away from the airport or maybe even inside the airport if u find good prices there.

Not an option for everyone but for me it would be a feasible option.

Bring a normal sized bag, you can easily fit 20-30 rolls in it.

As for customs within EU, you´r luggage is checked when you depart, not when you arrive ( because it´s already checked ) so the chances anyone saying anything upon you´r return is miniscule.

Well worth it imo, so please don´t say it´s a stupid idea because I actually liked it myself.

the only problem is that I actually got checked several times when I arrived...

Both from England, Norway, Italy ......... The customs can find whatever reason to have anyone checked (imagine that 30 rolls of tobacco is a serious issue loooooool 15 kg of tobacco)

Sorry - just thinking out loud.

I thought just ordering two small tins of pipe tobacco at £9 each would get in under the radar but i was still charged more than a hundred percent duty on it. I tried appealing but no luck whatsoever. It sucked.

I might just put a small order in with Northerner this evening - 4 cans to see if it goes through. If not it's no big financial loss.

If it does get stopped though I'd like to see what they ask in terms of tax. I don't have time to do a proper comparison between what we used to get charged in EU taxes vs. Customs duty, but I would assume it is not going to be that different. I think I used to pay circa GBP16 per roll in taxes. If duty is charged at GBP84.98 per kg (as stated in the 2011 budget pointed out earlier) then we should be charged around GBP20 tax per roll of portions. This is of course assuming my quick assumption of a roll of portions = 24% of GBP84.98. Does that sound about right?

I remember though that there was a thread some time ago where someone mentioned they got slammed by Customs when trying to order from the US which might contradict my assumptions. Can't seem to find it right now so I might be imagining it....

@Chossy - That is my next option. Fly to Sweden. I checked the flights last night and I can do a round trip to Sweden for a weekend and just stock up with five or six rolls. I've never been stopped by customs in the past so I don't see why they would have any reason to do so in the future...

Did they tell you why and did they give you any advice on duty?
