    Snus Question

    Hey all.

Is the snus brand Skruf pronounced as

    Skruf, as in 'roof'

    or

    Skruf, as in 'ruff'?

    thanks.

Edit: I added a poll thinking that maybe it differs between persons and nothing settles an argument like a statistic!

I have studied Swedish long time ago for work (I can still read it but I cannot speak it properly) and I can confirm Skruf is pronounced as Scroof (or "roof" as in your example).

Swedish is a very easy language to learn actually, there is a joke that says Swedish is comprised of German vocabulary and English grammar and you can learn it within an hour while on the plane from London to Stockholm.

    Snusa vidare (keep on snusing)!

Haha, yeah Swedish and Norwegian (which I leant a bit last year and was fun and relatively easy to learn).

I thought it was pronounced 'roof' but then my sister, who is visiting from Norway pronounced it as 'ruff'. Which confused me as I figured out of the two of us, she would know better. But I'll take your word for it and keep on pronouncing as 'roof'.

Edit: Haha, I only just voted myself then and what would have been 5 for 5 is now 6 for 5 in ^ favour. Very interesting.

I read or heard someplace that it is pronounced as if it were spelled "Skurf." What's up with that?

Not that it matters too much to me, as I'm a General fan, but apparently that's pronounced yen-er-el?!?

I am no language teacher and I don't know how to put this but "Skruf" is pronounced very abruptly without emphasizing the "oo".
The name Skruf refers to a small village (or town) in southern Sweden where the company was founded.
"Skruv" is the Swedish word for "screw". I don't know what "Skruf" means, it may even mean screw, I don't know but it would be interesting to learn if we could ask the Swedish members of our board to comment on this thread.

Option 1 for me. The only Swedish I know is what I read on a snus tin, so take it for what it's worth :^D

                According to Google Translate
the definition for skruf is coarse.

They even have a 'Listen' button and it sounds more like 'skroove'
but without the long-O (kinda like 'hoove' -- plural of hoof)

                  GOOD!

I did not know Skruf is another word for coarse ("grov" means coarse too). Thank you for researching on this!
We will all become fluent Swedish speakers soon if we keep this thread going.

I am sure we are all familiar with the phrase "denna tobaksvara kan skada din......"

Yes and that massive word ''avhengighetsskapende'' means Addictive. . . it's pretty obvious once you really analyse the word. . avhen - add, gighets - ict, skapende - ive.

I asked my sister again later on who then confirmed that it was skruf as in roof and that before when she had said it she must have been getting her languages mixed up. It happens.

There are 2 Swedish guys on You Tube that watched some Americans Review vidoes and saw the terrible pronunciation so they decided to make a video. First they pronounced things the way we do and after they laughed for a second they pronounced it the right way. They actually used the exact example Skruf like Roof.
