Skoal Bandits and when moist snuff was banned in the UK.

So was it ASH that helped ban moist snuff in the UK after campaigning that they believed it to cause mouth cancer - around the time of Skoal Bandits, right? Yet, Clive Bates from ASH former topdog there is here on his blog later on claiming smokeless to be much safer than smoking.

You don't know the half of it. If you search the house of commons website you can find transcripts of politicians accusing other politicians taking pay offs from US smokeless so they could build their Skoal bandits factory in Scotland. During this time Skoal and Copenhagen were advertising on US TV. 'just a pinch between your cheek and gum' etc.

Then there was backlash from the anti tobacco nazis as they felt the TV commercials suggested dip was safer than cigarettes. and they also suggested US smokeless were targeting children with their advertising. This was of course bullshit all their claims of a 50 fold increase in mouth cancer just did not happen. All the anti tobacco organisations believe all this bullshit.

This anti tobacco propaganda came to the UK shortly after skoal bandits went on sale. The UK government set out to ban moist snuff. This initially failed. But when the UK joined the EU the brought this ban with them and the rest is history.

I am confident that the ban will be lifted when the results of the current directive come out. This time round the cigarette companies are on board. There are many credible health reports all showing moist snuff is significantly safer than smoking. So lets hope for the best.

You have more confidence than I do. Near as I can tell, the zealots aren't concerned with truth, or improving people's lives. They're only interested in furthering their agenda. It won't stop with tobacco either. Once that's gone, they'll fixate on something else; food perhaps...

+1 if that were true they would be passing out snus at the doctor's office. I could just tell Northerner my insurance information and have them pick up the tab for my snus. Like a prescription.

No matter what happens Sweden have a permanent exempiton so I will move there if the ban is not lifted. But I am hoping the ban will be lifted.

I think it might be (50 50 chance) and if it becomes popular the tax will be high because eh what the hell snus is sinful or something. It's also a fairly remote possibility (5-10%) they might make all smokeless tobacco illegal the anti-tobacco groups seemed to realize SWM was right there's no logical reason snus should be illegal but makla, twists, and gutka legal If that happened it wouldn't be enforceable. Sweden wouldn't tolerate snus being illegal in sweden they'd almost definitely leave the E.U. if that happened.

In the U.S. the odds of any tobacco product (menthol cigs, smokeless tobacco) is probably less than 1 percent and if it did would cause a backlash. I could be wrong it was kind of shocking cloves were made illegal until you consider that PM, RJR and Lorillard don't make them. Dip has I believe a 40-50 percent profit margin, and snus portions probably 50-60 compared to 20-25 for cigarettes.

Edit: Hmm Swedish Match had a 46 percent operating margin of snus and snuff which since they sell longhorn is probably a little lower than normal.
