Can anyone answer an EU question?

Hi, I have a brother who's leaving from the US for Scotland at the end of this week, and he wants to bring snus with him. Is that going to be a problem?

Is it only illegal to sell snus in the EU, or is it illegal to bring it in on an airplane too?

Thanks in advance for any definitive answers.

Snus is legal for personal use. Only commercial selling is illegal. Also using snus on an airplane or bringing in your own snus isn't a problem. However, I don't know what the tax free limit would be. For smoking tobacco it's 200g, maybe for snus it's more.

Asquar there should be no problem. There is a limit on how much tobacco one can bring into the UK for which you can check the UK Customs website.

Personally, I've brought back snus from Sweden and South Africa (five tins and a roll respectively) without any problem . So he should be fine if he brings a reasonable amount. Once he is here he can always order from Buysnus or Northerner if he needs to. There is no problem with importing it.

As far as I am aware the only limitations apply to selling snus.

Unless you're bringing a ridiculous amount (like 5 rolls or something), I agree, it's not a problem at all. I've taken up to a roll travelling in and out of the UK, France, Germany, Austria - no problems anywhere. The only time someone even asked me what it was was in Canada, and at that because I had my steel icetool tin and I guess it looked unusual on the x-ray machine.

This may be a little off topic but I am originally from the UK and manage to make it back to visit family every couple of years. As a longtime heavy smoker the long flight was a nightmare and the numerous vodka-tonics would make the cravings worse. I think snus, now that I use it exclusively will make things much more pleasant.

jamesstew, I just had to fly from Raleigh to Seattle a couple of weeks ago for my Niece's wedding. YES, it was the most pleasant flight I have ever taken since smoking was banned on flights. I had done the gum before, but that never worked well, and I was always rushing for the exits as soon as we landed to light up.

Using snus now, it was just an amazingly different experience. My Mom even commented after I landed that it didn't seem like I had been flying all day.
