    Portion Take Over

I usually browse buysnus.com and northerner daily to get ideas about what i would like to try next and make a nice little "wish" list of all thats there. Also looking at the icetool ill be getting on my birthday from my wife.

But here is what puzzles me.

I know portions are more discreet and easier to dispose of in public and is just consumer friendly when you are in a public setting.

But out of all those portions im left to just pick and choose from a very select field of los snus. Its disappointing because there really seems to not be alot of diversity in the los snus market.

Here in america, american snuff is mainly loose. Long cut/ Fine cut and just a whole world of flavors. In any gas station the whole shelf from one wall to another is american snuff with sooo many brands and flavors. Pouches really do not sell well over here....at least it seems that way. Most brands may offer one choice in pouches and another brand maybe two. I noticed too that these are also usually alot older. Example a can of copenhagen snuff or long cut will say made June 6th while the pouches are May 20th or older and are so dried out they lose flavor in 20 mins.

I just wish snus offered more los varieties to try or at least offer the pouch varieties in los form as well.

    Anyone else?

I suppose that the easy answer is that dip in America has had a tradition of being a more consumer-marketed product while in Sweden snus has simply been an item of tradition - in the sense that it's like Borscht, Kimchee, the English Breakfast, Grits, or Guacamole... the sort of thing that people have been making more or less the same way for the past few hundred years or more. Portion snus was the big modern break into the variety-counter style of product, discrete and polished for the modern citizen. Loose snus is something perhaps with less appeal to the Swedish market for choice and more appeal to the old traditionalists who have been snusing in more or less the same way for generations. Try getting a Russian to put rice in his borscht, an Englishman to have pancakes and maple syrup with his breakfast, or a Georgia countryman to put strawberries in his grits - it's just the sort of thing that's a bit more of a tough sell, I guess. It all comes down to culture, I suppose.

I'd been thinking about this too, noticing the selection on buysnus having multiple kinds of portions plus multiple brands etc. Whereas los just has a fraction of that in comparison.

Zero, you are eloquent as f*ck! no better way of putting it really. You really are a bit of a snusologist.

Just Kimchee goes with everything and I cannot imagine that there is anything, which would make a wierd combination with it

                    BLASPHEMER!!!!

Grits + butter and salt. Anything else and it is no longer grits. Might as well have a bowl of oatmeal and fruit

With American looe snuff there is very little chance in being discreet. If I'm spitting a brown fluid with my lower lip sticking out, I see no reason not to have dark chunks of snuff in my teeth. Snus on the other hand, is less protruding in the upper lip and requires no spitting. The portion eliminates the loose tobacco floating around in the teeth, far more discreet. In any case, I have come to prefer a tasty snus over snuff or boring smokes any day. (I do miss my pipes from time to time).

                              snusfather,

Its easy for a comment like that from someone who sounds like they never used american snuff. For someone who chooses to use snuff the need to spit really isnt a concern. I have gone to stores shopping with just a little bitty discreet spitbottle in my pocket and never bothered me.

What im saying is i really doubt snus will ever get big in america, which should be the next big market for snus, if all the consumer has is portions to pick from. As ive stated before people do not buy the puch varieties around here at all compared to the loose snuff varieties. Pouches have been stated as marketed for women who use american snuff or for people like myself who are at work or just want a neat and clean way to use tobacco. But the sales just arent there in that market to justify multiple pouch production in as many varieties as loose snuff. And the flavor just doesnt last as long nor is as enjoyable as loose.

Im saying as an american snus customer im use to loose tobacco and really hate the pouches. Yes they have a use and people love them but i feel the market has turned a cold shoulder to los users as far as flavor and variety goes.
