Toque - Snus novices Gum/throat/stomach Burn?

We (Toque Snuff) have a number of snus flavours being tested by our all English tasting panel at present, all are snus virgins and all are saying the same thing. How do we get over the initial burning of the gums? One classic quote from a panel member was "I've had Vindaloos (Indian Curry) that burn less than these". I find it subsides after a while, but even I, an avid snuff user, find I have to keep moving my snus around to reduce the burning sensation. The current favourite method is the Polo. Put your snus through the Polo (mint sweet with a hole in the middle) and let it slowly dissolve. LOL!

Do any of you old hands have any better advice for our snus novices?

It is a question of getting used to it. Everyone gets a burning sensation in their gum, throat and stomach at first. I used a lot of white portions when I first started, which has less of a drip, but it still burned like hell, and easily got me nauseous if I hadn't eaten a big meal right before popping one in. But after a while, it disappeared. Now I only feel it if the snus is extremely moist or very strong, or if I have an empty stomach.

If you want, send some samples here, and I can try it out as well to see how I react to it.

I honestly don't remember much burn when I started snus. Maybe it has something to do with your preparation. Too much salt, ph too high, wrong tobacco... I dunno. I'd get a little bit of a throat burn, but nothing I considered uncomfortable.

The first times it burned like hell, but it disappeared after one week or so. It was Ettan OP by the way.

I agree with Ixskllr, It shouldn´t be burning. A couple of weeks ago a handed out some Thunder portions to some smokers at work, they have never tried snus before and kept them in for about 15 minutes, then they could feel the nic hit and spat ´em out! But they didn´t complain about a burn or any unpleasant feeling.

I remember a little burn when I started with snus, nothing too much. It’s just a question of getting used to that burning sensation, it goes after a while. What I remember more is my gums getting sore. I guess the only advice I could give is this, if it’s annoying you, switch sides with each new snus. I’m not sure what to say, other than, you’ll get over it

I got the burning on the gums and in the throat when I first started using snus - Thunder Frosted. After a couple of days of steady use it went away. Having water on hand at all times helped with the throat burn. I never noticed any problems with my stomach burning though.

BTW - on your site right now putting together my first snuff order ever. Very excited to try it!

Had also massive burn when first started, took about a month when it finally dissapeared. Used also Frosted in my early days

One thing to keep in mind for those of you who started with mint, is that has the menthol burn aside from the tobacco. I still get that kind of burn. I don't think there's any way around that.

IMO, it's the amount of nic that determines the degree of burn. New users will have a "burn" until they become use to the "brand/flavor;" however, after prolonged use, the burn becomes subtle. If you rotate portions, as many of us do, you'll notice that some brands/flavors provide a better "hit" than others. For me at least, this is usually based on the amount of nic in the portion. Some products however, screw with their Ph levels which also causes burn.

Here's the secret... balance taste and burn because they are not mutually exclusive. For me, taste is more important than burn. Rich, smokey tobacco flavor seems to be one of the mainstay favorites. Look at what the top sellers are and then offer an innovative alternative on flavor and nic concentrations.

                    JMO...

Salt and baking soda burn. Menthol-type aromatics also burn. Like lxskllr, I have only ever gotten used to the salt and baking soda -- menthol still burns my lip/gums.

Isn't snus tasting in England a bit like wine tasting in Saudi Arabia?

I drink yerba mate with my snus to make the lip-burn more pronounced...

Snus initially bothered my throat, but once I made it through the first day, it went away. But it's a good idea to have something to drink nearby. But snus did continue to burn my gums for a while, months after starting in fact, but it only ever happened when I left snus in for more than an hour. It wasn't immediate, and I didn't feel the burn while the snus was in. Finally, it no longer bothers me.
