    Ammonia

I have a can of Triumph snus that smells strongly of ammonia. It tastes the same though. I can't remember if my previous cans smelled the same or not. I have had the can for a week but it's been refrigerated. It's weird tho cuz they just sit on the counter at the gas stations where they're sold unrefrigerated and i think they never smelled of ammonia before....

Do they add ammonia to triumph like they do cigarettes as a nicotine delivery enhancer?

Or is my snus breaking down or what??

That stink is just something that happens with snus. There is no ammonia in it. Snus can only contain things that are consumable by Swedish law. I dont know why, but some do stink a bit more than others. It should still taste just fine.

Ammonia is produced by bacteria during fermentation. People who ferment their own tobacco or weed know that smell, it's a sign that the fermentation goes well. It can be stopped by heating over 70 degree Celsius for 5-10 minutes. The snus can still be consumed, these bacteria are not harmful. However, it's said that they produce nitrosamines.

Could be some sort of byproduct, but I can assure you that there is no ammonia in there.

I don't have an answer to that. Only thing I can tell you is to toss the can if it tastes like ass. I have never had a can go bad on me. Some stink more than others, but they all taste as they are intended to.

The stuff I use regularly (Phantom Blue Los) smells almost identical to windex when you open the can.

I noticed this, but was not as charmed as you seem to be.

Yeah, the ammonia in cigarettes is used because it is alkaline and freebases the nicotine. In snus the same job is accomplished by adding baking soda, which also makes the snus alkaline, so there is no need to add ammonia. I know the smell you mean, though - usually it's older snus that gets that smell to it. Keeping it in the fridge seems to help.
