How did you learn of Snus?

After being completly addicted to American smokeless tobacco (Kodiak), I was looking for something different. I grew tired of 15 yrs of spit bottles, spilled spit bottles, kids drinking out of the spit bottles(by accident), carry spit bottles around in public, or looking for a plant or trash can to spit in..
I had resorted to wearing nicotine patches in public, not because I wanted to quit, I was that tired of the hassle of spitting.
I have never heard about Snus until May of this year. I was watching, a program on television about the "History of Tobacco". It showed segments about ancient uses, cigars, cigarettes, chewing, smokeless, and finished with a 2 min. segment about Snus.
After the program went off, I "Googled" Snus. Did about 5 mins of research and ordered a sample box.
I really enjoy Catch Licorice and Euclyptus, and Roda Lacket, portions. It has also saved me money. The Kodiak, that used to use was $4.75, and I was using a can to a can and a half a day. The Snus works out to be around $4.15 a can, including shipping. But a can will last me 3 to 4 days. The nicotine content must be higher in Snus than the Kodiak. It seems like,I do not need it as much or often.
I would like to say "Thank You" Sweden for sharing this little treasure with the rest of us.
Lets hear your discoverey story of Snus...

I smoked. A lot. I smoked a pack and a half of KOOLs every day for 12 years. I dabbled with smokeless tobacco when I was in high school, and it never interested me much. I always thought smoking was classy, and dip was just for backwoods cretins. In the Spring of this year, I started to get very sick. I had a horrible cough, and got bronchitis twice, and I was still puffing away like a chimney. I knew about snus for several years, and I almost switched to snus 3 years ago, but I decided to stick with cigarettes as my classy way of killing myself. This time, I was tired of being sick, tired of spending money, and tired of going outside to smoke. I quit May 23rd 2008 and started snusing the same day, and I've been mostly smoke free ever since. I've smoked two cigarettes since then, neither of them have been enjoyable. I give snus a lot of credit in helping me find a healthier life. Thats my story.

I told this a few times before, but when I tried to quit smoking it was soon clear to me, that nicotine gums are useless, so I googled for Kautabak (the German word for chewing tobacco and a product of the past, more popular than cigarettes till the end of WWII, still widely known by name and still produced, but only by a single family business and almost impossible to find in local shops) .

The German Wikipedia-article for Kautabak mentioned snus so I also read the snus-article. Unfortunately, I "tortured" myself another 14 days with nicorette gums and occasional cigarettes, but studíed almost everything I could find about smokeless tobacco. I wasn't sure, if snus was the right thing for me. What I found in several forums, including this one, seemed to contradict itself. Snus was described as a 'nicotine-bomb' in one thread, in the other thread it was described as less useful than the gums.

Nonetheless, snus seemed the best alternative to the undoubtably useless gums, so finally I placed an order. 3 days later (yeah, Sweden is a neighbour-country) I got the package and the first portion of Skruf Stark cleared all my doubts. 5 weeks later, when I already called myself a snuser, I became a member of this forum.

      Cheers!

I found one of my old posts, so here's a copy/paste...

I first heard about snus from a buddy of mine that went to Norway. He was saying it was a snuff that both men and women used, even swallowing the juice Shocked That thought was unfathomable to me after getting sick a few times in the past after using American dip and chew.

Well one day I saw a Camel fridge display in a local convenience store with snus inside. They also had a little booklet that gave a brief description, and being a big fan of tobacco, and wanting to try something new I got a tin. I thought it was pretty tasty, and I then started researching snus online. That led me to the Northerner site, and I got a 24 tin sampler pack.

I was a little put off by the Swedish snus style at first. It wasn't as sweet or as highly flavored as the Camel product. After a couple of days though the subtlety of the Swedish makes won me over...

I first was introduced to snus, when my brother brought home half a can of ettan from his work. He worked at the safeway packing plant in Bellevue, WA, and some guy he knew at work taught him how to bake a pris and use it. I tried some with my brother, and liked it well enough, but then pretty much forgot about it. That was probably 8-9 years ago. Forward time to the day that Camel put out snus cans in local convenience stores here in the portland metro area. Back then it was 3.29 a can, and I started using religiously. I participated in a few of the Camel market research studies that they had locally (I got gift cards and free snus) and finally decided to find out just where snus came from. I happened upon a blog (thank you Mr. Unloadingzone, who also gets credit for the rolls that I purchase on buysnus) and was directed to buysnus.com. From there I saw icetool, looked up the icetool website to read more about them, and from there I discovered the Snuson forum. The rest is history.

I found snus (surprisingly) in Sweden  Friend of a friend gave me a portion of Grov in a bar in Göteborg and I was instantly sold. Took a few tins back with me and quit smoking like that.

I actually quit smoking with Copenhagen Pouches. I used Copenhagen Snuff (Fine Cut) for awhile until it started to hurt my gums when i brushed my teeth and then the dentist told me to either take a break or i would suffer extensive gum loss. It Was bad.

I was never too fond of pouches because they only lasted 30 mins while loose snuff lasted an hour.

A friend of mine got a sample of Camel Snus Original and let me try it and it was OK but i used it wrong...lol.

Then in May i started to get Canker Sores really bad and it was just too painful to dip.

I then researched Snus and ended up on these forums. I then found Triumph at the gas station beside my house. Liked it alot better than Camel but then i got my General Onyx and like ive said 50000 times, i never looked back.

Now im diggin on a Pris of General Los.

*** But we must give due to Camel for turnin us onto the real stuff. As much as we bash it for being bad or too sweet, if it wasnt for them alot of us in the states wouldve never ended up here. ***

I've posted this elsewhere but I'll gladly re-write that magic few weeks again.

I meet some people from Norway, studying in Eindhoven.

One of them uses snus (General lös) like there's no tomorrow. Like 3/4 can a day (or more if he was drinking).

They became my friends. They end up coming over to my place often and I end up seeing them at my usual hang-out place in the city often.

Friend has a custom of discarding half-empty cans of snus ("Det er tørr" he'd say, laughing. The showoff.) so he though he might as well leave them at my place in the fridge with just a pinch or two inside. He'd just as often be caught without and use those again.

                I eventually try the stuff.

After a while I suddenly find out I actually don't like smoking anymore. I'm shocked.

An unopened pack of Drum cigarette rolling tobacco goes into the trash after sitting on my desk for 2 weeks.

I Google some and a bit later order some snus from www.snusbutiken.com

                Rest is history.

                  How I happened upon snus

My story pretty much goes as the rest sadly camel was the catalyst for my research and cross over to snus. I smoked for many years and mixed in a can of cope or grizzly now and again, by august of last year I was mainly dipping, only having a few smokes a week, on the new year decided to give up smoking altogether. April rolled around and my brother came to stay with my wife and I while he was training at the company I work for, he produced a tin of the camel snus and told me what he knew about it. After trying all flavors camel had to offer I did my reasearch and happened upon this site, which lead me to Northerner.com, I ordered a few portion flavors and was not too into them. I then ordered a pris master and an assortment of los now I have found I am completely hooked on General and there is no looking back for me. Today I decided it was time for me to join this forum and add my two cents where I could, I really enjoy this site and all the info I have found, thanks all!

Quit smoking cold turkey (second time) and noticed a display of Tourney snus at a Speedway. Tried it, wasn't great, but helped curb the urge. Looked up 'snus' and that's all it took!

                          Thanks sagedil

Thanks sagedil I agree with most now that the camel stuff is just too sweet and nothing even close to the real stuff. Now if I could just convince my brother.

first camel snus -----> then "googled" snus -----> led me to snuson.com -----> went to buysnus.com----> 8)

p.s. I no longer smoke them, but when I did, KOOL milds were my crack, very tastey.
