That is just dumb, you are talking about a 3 dimensional object so if you were talking about "area" with it then it would be surface area.

R = radius of can
H = Depth of can

Surface area would be (Pi * R^2 * 2) + (2 * Pi * R * H)

But really measuring the actual volume would be more sensible, excluding inside vs outside volume...
