They are reasoning it like this: "Since health consequences of snus are 60/90/99 % smaller than consequences of smoking and snus is more effective than medical products made for quitting smoking." (translated poorly from finnish, sorry )
Of course it would mean that the price of snus would be pretty high in EU since the taxes but it would be a lot easier to buy it from local stores.
    Opinions?

By the way got the information from Finnish version of v2 tobaccos site (http://fi.v2tobacco.com) and some other Finnish sites about snus!
No way! Even if they do legalize it (which is more than very unlikely), there will be an immediate ban on internet sales like there is a ban on internet sales of cigarettes... and we will end up with Thunder portions in the best case scenario in shops across Europe with absolutely no possibility to order anything else online..... don't touch the poo or it will stink even worse...
Are you in Finland? I thought Finland was aspiring to become completely tobacco free by 2050...?

It is banned here where I live..... I tried to send a 10 pack of cigs to a friend in Italy and was told that under EU regulations I am not allowed to send cigarettes by post....it does not surprise me that Britain has so many freedoms compared to the rest of us. You were alone to stand against the nazis, now you are alone to stand against the stupid EU regulations.

If we are given a referendum on EU membership (which the people want) it looks highly likely people would vote to leave. We can then buys snus again and it could be sold here too!! Good enough for me!

You guys should remember that snus was allowed in the EU till 1992.

The ban was a demand from the British government before joining the EU. The UK had already enacted a ban for dip and snus in the late 80's.

Besides of that, it's not a definition of Godwin's law that Nazi comparisons come up in a thread like this. The prohibitionists simply are Nazis. Their way of thinking emanates directly from the fascistic idea of man.

It's a problem world-wide that the old generation of politicians, who witnessed the war and developed a very humanistic view of the world, is dying out and the new generation seemingly is to dumb to learn even the most basic lessons from history. The undemocratic EU government and the utterly moronic snus-ban are only subordinated aspects of a world that on the whole is slowly becoming more and more open to fascistic and technocratic ideas again.

              Cheers!

                  Damn UK.

I think I remember the case. It was about Skoal Bandits in the 80s. They linked them to mouth cancer so oral snuff was banned. Goes without saying though the TSNA difference between that old product and Swedish snus would be quite significant to say the least. But hey there's probably no chance they would re-evaluate things now. There are too many cigarrette and NRT £s to loose.

I do know it's our fault, but i don't remember the 80s Skoal Bandits thing, i've learned all this in the last couple years. Everyone and their mother is talking about safe alternative to smoking now, so i still think the cigarette and pharmaceutical companies have noticed how big safe alternatives have got, along with snus outside of Sweden, and now see it as a direct threat, so they're paying the governments to keep them in business for the next generation of smokers and quitters, and keep the cash coming in for themselves, and tax money for governments.

Would put money on that *cigarettes -> NRT -> cigarrettes* /and repeat keeping the £s coming in.

Snus would be taxed so I don't see that being an issue, also don;t forget that alot of the big tobacco companies make snus too (JTI, BAT, Imperial Tobacco etc) so it is very much in their interest to have the ban lifted so they can add another product to their lines, cigarette companies make snus too not just Swedish Match (who also make cigars and snuff!).

Also Altria owns Philip Morris, Gallagher, USSTC (skoal and Copenhagen), Imperial Tobacco and part of JTI, so the argument that its the tobacco companies paying off governments just doesn't wash with me, they stand to gain far more from a lifting of the ban than it remaining in place.

The ban on oral tobacco was based on, now old and outdated research, that happened to be commissioned by a pharmaceutical company iirc.

I guess that depends on your definition of the word "definition"...

                            1) Goverment play double standard , lots of money from cigarettes and pharma company's so why they should alow snus?
