Changed from my original message due to my stupidity.

Gotlands is made at the factory under contract by Taboca AS. Thought that was common knowlege. They bought the factory back in 2004 in Gotland Sweden.
(source: www.taboca-as.com - click [company] link)
So is Montecristo and RyJ.
(source: www.taboca-as.com - click [brands] link)
The gotalnds brands are not listed, as they are produced under contract there but still maintain their own label.
I know that V2 uses lots of Asian tobacco (source www.v2tobacco.com)
As far as snus starting w/ swedes in american tobacco fields... That I cannot confirm, but I did find an interesting timeline here: (http://www.snusexpress.com/snus_history.htm)
Sorry Grim, I had to do it.

Grim
Grim:
Hold your horses, and try to calm down.
I do not need facts as I have spent the last 11 years working in the industry. I developed LD which my colleagues and I launched as a cigarette in Russia, Ukraine, and Poland for Liggett-Ducat, and then Gallaher, who bought them. We did it as snus in 2005.
When I got to Sweden, I delisted Grand and Strong Cut plain and Juniper, and launched LD as a snus. I also dealt with the morons at Swedish Match who decided to take us to court because Gustavus was in a dark can like General. They actually had a point ;-).
I worked with Habanos Nordic and Bonaventura AS to launch MC and RJ in Sweden and Norway for Taboca. I know WTF I am talking about.
I love this business, and I have always loved talking to consumers. Snus is quite a particular product.
I am out now, but I do not appreciate having a consumer bash me. I was GM of Gallaher in Scandinavia and then GM of Taboca. Read Issues of "Tobak & Mer" if you require my name, but try and go easy on the flaming! I hold no grudges.

Also, referring to SM as "morons" and openly discussing the details of a lawsuit (settled or not) is in bad taste, if nothing else. Even more so when one considers the rather inflammatory turn this thread has taken.
For someone who claims to "hold no grudges" you seem to have a rather large one with both GS and SM.

SM
My grudge with SM is that they are the absolute best at what they do. Gallaher's predecessor in the was the Austrian Tobacco monopoly, and they altered the packaging of Gustavus to mirror the SM core brands. Slapped wrists were deserved.
It's a fun business, and SM owns it. Many were surprised that Philip Morris didn't scoop it up.
I think the "snus as a cure for cigarettes" thing may have dried up.

Are you still in the business? It's interesting hearing some trivia from someone on the inside.
Do me a favor if you can... Call up some of your buddies from Gallaher, and get them to bring back LD Blue :^P That flavor was unique in the industry. I still have a few cans in the freezer, but I already miss it :^(

LD Blue
lxskllr:
I could try to get them produce more LD Juniper, but I am sure they wouldn't go for it.
Send a letter to "Brand Manager, Snus" to Japan Tobacco International in Geneva, Switzerland. If you're extremely lucky, you'll hear from a nice Spanish fellow or a Russian girl who is his brand manager.

Re: Gotland
Originally posted by aj01I find it humorous that Jakobsson's snus advertises the way they do on their site. There is no factory with local tobacco growing next to it.
Taboca AS owns the former Gotlandssnus factory in Roma. The equipment, all top-notch and new, was purchased by Taboca. It's on a converted industrial site.
Snus provides much grist for romanticism, for sure. It is, in fact, tobacco waste, or stem. Swedes working in American tobacco fields in the 19th century chewed this stem, leftovers from the harvest, and ended up exporting it home. The "Swedish tradition" actually comes from the USA, where many millions of Swedes and Norwegians emigrated to back then.
What makes it special, however, is packaging and flavoring. The tobaccos are mostly sourced in Asia, due to high nic content, and the production process involves a high level of sterility based on current Swedish food law. Super-strict, and not as romantic as the ads would say. White coats and mouth-guards. Also, SM is the only company doing proper white portion due to a proprietary process which extrudes the tobacco into the pouch. No-one else has come close.
Nice man. you seem to know your story to??
Gotland is an werry small island! so if we have an tobacco feild 3 miles from the factory, would you call it "next to it?" i do.
As i have told you before Gotlandssnus is an company who stands for the qualification/knowhow of the factory, that what Nordic was bying from Gotlandssnus a few years ago!
we do have an thight relationship.
our brands is ours !!
"my smell for you is that you working in a big american tobacco company?"
If you buy a book in swedish tobacco history, you will find out that tobacco have been grown from the year 1700 in sweden, it was Carl von Linné that gave the name from Jean Nicot to Nicotiana. And after 1800 century when some german scientists found the alkolid, they gave it the name Nicotin.
Read more history on www.buysnus.com or buy a book./Jimi

And, in the US at least, you could not be MORE wrong on "snus as a cure for cigarettes". You either have no conception of the American market, upcoming legislation and the needs of 46MM+ US smokers........or you're not in the industry any more because you've become anti-tobacco.
If you think its a "fun" business, then why would you as a GM quit? What do you do for a living now, I wonder.

so far it is the only portion that doesnt make me want to take it out and put in some los.
General onyx a close second but i prefer the flavor of the jakobsson's
Now stop with the drama and make some Jakobsson's Los please
Speaking of snus, I did an exchange of 4 cans of Swedish (General Onyx, Jakobssons Ice Fruit, PM 1847, Gotlandssnus Gul) for 4 cans of Triumph (2 original, 2 mint). We both had been introduced to snus by a can of Camel. He never had Swedish and I never had Triumph...SM made, but "flavored for the American Market". We just started so no leaking of early thoughts, but this is going to be real interesting. I may even (gulp) go buy a can of Camel Frost since it's their most popular and add that to the experiment. Developing..............
