OK I got cross. I wanted to try Nick & Johnny Los because I have just got in to los snus big time and was furious with myself for never having ordered it before it was cruelly discontinued - so I made myself a full can from 2 cans of portions by emptying 48 little bags and rehydrating the stuff with a garden sprayer. I don't know if this comes close to what the los used to be like - but by jingo it's a corker!
Overview - this is a mighty snus! Not for the faint hearted.
Texture - difficult to be objective as I made it myself, but a medium ground of snus similar to Ettan in consistency. The little grains that came out of the portions looked smaller than they ended up when I had rehydrated them
Tobacco taste - not that big to be honest - I was expecting more when the snus wasn't in portion form especially from a stark. It's from the same tobacco taste as something like Roda Lacket or Prima Fint but the flavours on top are so much less subtle that it's only just there
Flavourings - as advertised citrus and licorice. It's a bit spicy and the licorice is mainly evident in the sweetness - it's not like a candy sweet - more like the sweetness you get when you chew raw licorice root, and the citrus is like lemon peel - much less harsh than some citrusy snuses. The overall flavour has the same blend as a really good jamaica ginger cake - there's a good mix of spicy, salty, sweet and dark without any flavour dominating at all.
Nic Kick - whoa boys - it's a strong one! I think it must be because the tobacco inside a portion is stronger than los anyway - if you do this with any snus be careful with how much you dose yourself - I started writing this with the pris just in and 10 mins or so in this has kicked in pretty hard - much more than an equivalent pris of Skruf Stark would have done. I'm really enjoying it.
Feel in the lip - For those of you after a burn in your lip who have become accustomed to snusing - do this and you'll definitely get it again! It was a bit granular and that could be because I didn't let it sit in the fridge for long enough after rehydrating the snus. It also ran disappointingly early in the pris which again I'd put down to it being portion snus.
Conclusion - Sometimes I've got a hankering for a very big nicotine hit, this is the answer - and with a very satisfying flavour. The preparation is messy, boring, expensive and nerdy all at the same time - but even with that I think I'll keep some of this for the odd time I really want to snus big time. Like I've said - I don't know what Nick & Johnny Los tasted like - but if it was a slightly refined, slightly less strong snus than I made out of the portions then I would certainly buy rolls and rolls of the stuff!
