    Has General Extra Strong changed?

For me it is the classic stark snus, and it has been completely consistent since it was launched alongside Claq Qui back in 2008. And it has always looked like this:

and although the name had been made more English when it became "General Extra Strong" - nothing much changed.

However it now looks like this:

... and it seems to have gained an extra title of Classic portion ... I don't really know what that means.

However - and here is the crunch for me ... it seems to taste different. It's so subtle that I must confess that it could just be my brain seeing another can and being suspicious enough to alter my enjoyment of the snus. Differences in the taste could also be due to Northerner's new shipping regime - allowing the snus to go unrefrigerated for weeks on end. But could there also be a new formula at play.

I have compared an old can from the freezer with a new one and these are the differences I see:

    1. the portions look bigger now - and they are also far more moist throughout the can.
    2. the smell/aroma when snusing is much more fruity - the taste is similar to those in the SM Marlboro snus and Swedish Camel portions. The underlying flavour is undoubtedly General though.
    3. the sweetness seems more intense now - maybe that's because the more moist portions drip. There was always definitely some artificial sweetness in GES - but not so noticeable.
    4. The complexity and pepperiness seems to have gone for me.

So have Swedish Match messed around with a winning formula? Has anyone else noticed this? Am I imagining things? Or is it likely that due to several factors (shipping time/recovering from a cold) - it's just me worrying too much.

It would be great to get some thoughts

I have not tried the re-packaged portions but the Los is as good as it ever was.

Taste the same to me, but a year or so ago I bought a roll and the taste was definitely off. Tasted like onyx. Maybe you got a funky batch?

I am very glad those are the first responses ... rather than a dodgy batch - I'm pretty sure that the differences in taste are entirely down to Northerner's absurd way of sending snus.

Another reason nobody should order from them any more!

The cans are different because General has redesigned all their cans, except Onyx, which I still can't get. However, I just recently ordered a roll of this (through snuscentral) and it's the first I've tried it and I'm not impressed. They are way too moist for me. I haven't noticed any sweetness, but I'm not keen on the flavor. I also order a roll of the Thunder original, and I like it a lot more.

The recipe has not changed. It's still the classic General recipe that has been used for years.

GES is my favorite snus. I've never had the portions, though...only los.

                Hi Chad,

That's great if it's true ... I'm talking about the GES formulation though which was quite different to regular General - I'm sure there would be uproar in Sweden if they tried to change the recipe for General OP.

Have you heard this direct from Swedish Match regarding GES and the re-branding. If so it would be very reassuring to know that it's just a batch that's been spoilt in the post.

                Cheers

Correct. The General line has been rebranded/redesigned, but the recipes have not changed.

I think if a feature of these new cans is that they are more moist then you're bound to notice the sweetness sooner - it's all in the drip.

                      Cheers
