    Kardus 2012 - The Unveiling

Just opened up my first ever box of Kardus, the new Kardus 2012. Over at Badger & Blade, we have what we call "shaving porn" - really cool / sexy / appealing pictures of shaving gear. I figured I would do the same for Kardus.

If you must ask (and I know you must), I did not open the actual snus container. It's been shipped over from Sweden, and I want to give the snus some time to equalize in the fridge before I try some. Patience, precious...

          Christian temperance, Rick...

Also, does anyone here speak fluent Swedish and English? There is a sweet-ass book inside and I can't read a single word of it!

Try harder ;^) Swedish is fairly readable, and you can pick out a lot of words. For the rest, type it into GoogleTranslate. Congrats on your purchase. I can't wait to hear what you think of the snus.

lolz... I have been reluctant to include a review up until this point, because I wanted to wrap my head around the flavor profile first.

First things first. The presentation is second to none. They have obviously put much care into this snus - see the above pics. On opening the can, I got a somewhat strong sherry flavor, mixed with pure tobacco. Unlike most other snuses, you don't have to get past the snus aroma (usually of something like amonia) to what's underneath. The quality ingredients make this snus smell like what it is - tobacco and sherry. It simply smells heavenly.

Next is the prilla. The consistency of Kardus is totally unique. You can really feel the difference in the way this tobacco acts as you pack it into your icetool. Spongy, supple, almost alive. Simply beautiful. It seems alive compared to other snuses. The fact there there are only leaves in this snus, rather than the normal mixture of leaves and stems, makes a big difference too. It feels like silk when you put the prilla in.

The taste at first is extremely subtle. This snus takes its time. I was honestly disappointed at first, because most General products hit you with a flavor right off the bat. With Kardus 2012, all you get is echoes of sherry at first. The tobacco flavor is extremely smooth.

Things start to change soon, at about the 10 minute mark. The sherry and tobacco become more pronounced. The review said that "This sherry has a nutty character with notes of figs, sultanas, licorice and syrup." Maybe so, but I didn't get any of those flavors in the snus. Which is not to its detriment - au contraire, the sherry mixes with tobacco wonderfully. Eventually, the flavor of the sherry comes to the forefront of the palate, while the tobacco takes a supporting role. Simply marvelous.

I have not tried any other years of Kardus, having come to snus only this year, so I cannot speak to the comparison to previous versions. I can say that this is the most wonderfully subtle, enticing los I have ever had the pleasure of sampling. There is no drip to speak of, and I daresay that I will go and buy a quality sherry to enjoy with my Kardus 2012.
