Fairly new to snus could really use some help.

OK here is my situation. I smoked cigarettes for 13 years and quit when I was 28. I am now 32 and for the better part of the last 4 years have been completely addicted to Commit (Nicorette) Lozenges. I would pop a 4mg lozenge about 12 times a day. I was purchasing recently expired ones (the basically last 5 years past the expiration date lol) so was able to get them cheap for around $18 a box online. Recently I am no longer able to find any discounted lozenges and decided paying more then double wasn't really worth it but still wanted nicotine without smoking. I had tried Camel Frost when I first quit and thought it was OK. I tried it again and felt like it wasn't the same and the Marlboro Snus was HUGE and god awful. I looked else where and decided to order a box o snus from snus central which was an amazing deal. It was about $3 per can after shipping and I went with the mini's. I did order 3 regular portions as well though. Some included were mocha mint, offroad mint, offroad euchalyptus, general mini mint, lafayette etc. I had a really hard time tolerating anything that wasn't mint and the only one I really loved was General Mini Mint but did enjoy offroad mint as well. The 3 regular ones were Oden's Kannel (Cinnamon) Offroad White Coola, and Julesnus portion. I hated all of them A LOT. I couldn't taste cinammon, or cola, and the Julesnus was weird. I guess I don't like Glogg or mulled wine. Anyway if you are still reading this here are my questions.

Do you think I could tolerate ordering some Thunder Frosted or Oden's Extreme Cold White Portion? Based on how many commits I could pop etc. I could easily finish a mini portion and pop another in and didn't feel messed up by any of 3 large portions although I didn't enjoy them. I plan on ordering some General Mint White Portions as I enjoyed the mini mint so much. I'm guessing these are the same thing in a bigger pouch with 8mg of nicotine? It's hard to buy multiple cans without knowing what you are getting and based on how I hate 2/3 of the varieties I was given in the box o snus I am going to try to stick to mint varieties only for now. Last question for now I promise. I feel like I'm STILL doing something wrong when I snus. I place my portion mini or otherwise as close to my back teeth as possible while still being under my lip and resting on my gums. I get a lot of flavor at the beginning which cause me to sometimes get the hiccups and also the flavor is gone after about 15-20 minutes even with large portions. I have tried slightly towards my front teeth but still off to the side and this was actually worse. Any thoughts would be amazing. Thanks in advance.

You should be putting your portion in under your lip under your nose if that makes sense. Also check your messages.

I responded to your PM and then read your post again. Wait I thought I wasn't supposed to put it under my lip directly under my nose?! I heard that was bad for you.

No that's where you want to put it. You can move it a little to the left or right as you figure out how you prefer it. I move it around like that sometime within the use of 1 portion. Where your putting it now would make even the most experienced snuser gag a bit.....

Welcome to SnusOn! Try putting it towards the front of your mouth. It will feel strange for a while, but it won't come on too fast and give you hiccups. Just keep at it a bit and if you need something stronger try some stronger ones. Just keep at it the snus will win

Looks like Blue has got this pretty much covered

The only thing I might add is to sample some of the natural flavored snus. Try Prima Fint, Tre Ankare, and Ettan

Keep your mint on hand because you know you like it.....but work in the others as well.

One other thing.........I can't tell you the number of folks who have started exactly as you have.......General mint or Thunder Frosted exclusively............however the vast majority of them usually end up in the more traditional flavored snus camp within 6 months or so

I tell you this only to let you know:
              (a) you are not alone in your initial preferences......and if these preferences never change.......who cares.....use what you like.......that is what matters in the end anyway.
              (b) However, don’t be surprised if as time goes on your taste changes…........therefore don't throw anything away......if you don't like it.......stick in the freezer in a Ziploc bag and revisit it in a few months

Anyway........I hope this helps a bit...........and welcome to the forum
When it's my time to go, I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my uncle did....... Not screaming in terror like his passengers

Sent you another PM if you don't want to answer it then I understand. But I have a feeling your PM settings aren't set yet. If you go to settings upper right hand corner and click it then you will get to your settings page. Scroll down and on the left side of the page will be a general settings button. You can then setup your messaging alert and e-mail alert if you get a message. Should be pretty self explanatory once you follow those instructions....

SnusDog, good advice and I have all the ones I wasn't so fond of in the freezer. I did get one can of Tre Ankare and it was probably my favorite of the natural ones as I did polish it off. I wouldn't buy it regularly as of yet but like you said I'm sure my preferences will change in the future. I did notice the subtle differences in each for example the Mocha Mint was mint and I thought it was junk lol. The Rapè was too weird for me and I like gin so who knows, but like you said back in the freezer they went even the Jules which I felt was god awful.

Edit: Blue you were right about the settings and I did respond

Personally, I don't know if I would jump into ekstra sterk territory if I was in your shoes. If you're used to 4mg, that's a huge jump. Both Oden's Extreme and Thunder are pretty potent. If you do try those, be prepared for the dizziness and nauseousness that accompany having too much nicotine in your system. I, personally, use the whole spectrum from regular strength portions all the way up to extra strong, depending on my mood and situation. One of the perks of snus, being able to control your intake of nicotine as opposed to a fixed amount like a cigarette or nicotine patch. Different varieties and strengths are great! Sample the hell out of all of them and find what works for you. Everybody's tastes are different, but while experimenting keep an open mind. I never thought I'd like any tobacco flavored snusses, but I've come to love Olde Ving and don't mind the regular flavored General, this coming from someone who too started with just flavors (mint and wintergreen for me). If you have questions, don't hesitate to PM me or anyone on this forum. I can truly say that finding SnusOn is one of the best things that have happened to me. The support and hookups for snus have been a tremendous help for me, on top of that, I'm practically on the verge of quitting smoking thanks to this. Welcome to the forum!

Good advice and I appreciate the help. The only thing with the 4mg is that I could easily chain the lozenges so if the 16mg or so could last me an hour (now that I know where to put the portion haha) I think I could handle it. Blue is gonna help me out with a few cans so I'll be able to see if the extreme knocks me on my @$$ or not.

The best part of extreme is that it has a great delivery rate. It doesn't hit you all up front. I sometimes have a portion in for 3 plus hours without thinking about it. Then I don't need one for a lil while. It's awesome. And don't listen to Dman he's a rookie too......

Please stay posted on your experiences. Oh and Bigblue, I love your sense of humor lol, pretty fair to say though, as far as really getting into the Swedish snus. I started off with Camel snus about 2 years ago, and had my first experience with real Swedish snus about a year ago when a local tobacco shop carried General briefly. I smoked like a chimney at the time, and I was just looking for something to help me cut down, which it did. My old school allowed smoking on campus, so I never gave quitting much thought at the time. Then, my grandma contracted lung cancer after years of smoking and the new school I am currently attending is tobacco free. I also found out that a nearby tobacco shop sold General for $8/tin, so thanks, but no thanks to that. I came to this forum looking for alternatives, and I definitely found it. This gets me through school and really curbed my smoking. I went from a half a pack to pack a day at my peak, to maybe 1-2 cigarettes a day average now. In the next couple months, I plan on making that zero.

Congratulations on that, I know how hard it is. I traded one addiction for another with the lozenges but my lungs have thanked me since. The problem is my teeth and sometimes my stomach take a beating from them because god knows what the heck is in them. At least I know what I'm getting myself into with Swedish Snus and they mark the ingredients not the case with Glaxo Smith Kline go figure.

That was my thought exactly. Swedish snus has again and again proved to be relatively harmless. I will agree, it is so ironic that a a TOBACCO product has its ingredients affixed on every can, but NRT products, such as the nicotine losenges in your case show no such thing. It's funny how everybody attacks the tobacco companies, conveniently leaving out big pharma. These small tobacco companies (at least relative to Phillip Morris, RJ Reynolds, etc.) have proven to help people quit, big pharma's solution is shown to have I believe it was a 10% success rate for quitting. Pretty pathetic how things work. People are falsely lead to believe that all smokeless tobacco causes your teeth to fall out and later death, when obviously all smokeless tobacco is not created equal, essentially leading people to believe that these alternatives are no safer than smoking, which in and of itself is a complete and utter falsehood. Even my parents believe that garbage.
