How to make portion snus at home

Well - in principle it's fairly easy - you just need some stuff and some time on your hands unless you have a production line machine!

    You need:

yes that's right, throw your masculinity out of the window!
    HAIR STRAIGHTENERS

Or as I like to see them - the perfect heat sealing tool - they may even already be in your house!

    METHOD
So the method is easy - remember to wash your hands first if you're making these for someone else ;-) - when you open the pack of Portionspåsars you'll see that they are almost exactly twice the length of a normal portion. Cut them in half.

Fill the icetool with your home-made lös snus - 2 clicks is about right.

Put the icetool in the half portion bag and shoot it out towards the closed end.

Repeat until you have a can full.

Turn on the hair straighteners to a high heat and squeeze the open ends of the portions with them for a second or two.

Job done ... you can speed the process up a bit by filling the icetool to 4 clicks and then doing two at a time. You can line the portions up on a clean work-surface and zap the whole lot at once with the hair straighteners - takes a bit of practice that bit!

Yes it does take a while and I'm not sure it's worth it in the long run - but I have ordered one of these from Sweden and am hoping it will massively speed the process up:

as far as I can tell this is the snusers version of a hand-rolling machine - this works like an icetool you can fill with a whole can of lössnus and fill the portions with the trigger - you still have to cut the empty portions in half and fit them on the end. I'll let you know if it is any good when I get it. I ordered mine from www.tilbudet.nu - they will ship (non snus) to the UK but you have to email them and do an international bank transfer. If you want a cheap way to do international bank transfers on the internet have a look at www.transferwise.com - it's the cheapest method I've found yet.

    Cheers

That certainly sounds like it's much easier to get hold of the materials needed!

You mean like flying saucers? Or Rizlas - either way I haven't tried it.

          OK - special rizlas then!

I think I would find them a bit "shiny" in my mouth - I used to use OCB ultra-thin papers for rolling my own and they were really very shiny. But it's good to know there are lots of options.

If I can get portioning up a can in under 3 minutes then I'll probably go that way in the end for DIY snus.

You don't come across as whineing at all - and it's not nice to hear that you're in that situation - things will pick up though - they always do!

They don't automatically send overseas - but I emailed and the guy, Michael, said just place the order anyway and he would email with the bigger shipping cost and international bank transfer details ... I presume that's the same for the US too. Their site just says overseas in the bit about contacting them.

If you did contact them and they said no then I think you'll be out of luck. It's always worth googling around though - try www.snus2.se which definitely have them - they are a good company but have stopped shipping to the UK due to the EU ban - but there's no reason they wouldn't send out to you in the US and they used to be fully international and are a great company. Their site is in Swedish but Google Translate is a wonderful thing.

                Cheers

                  Thank-you Squeezy,
I love snus, to top it off for me
                  The smoke flavoring in Generals
                  products makes me seriously sick,
General is all that can be purchased
                  By the tin...
So I've had to resort to Copenhagen,
To my understanding the health risk are les?
Thanks again I want to make my own snus, I made 1attempt, I failed when converting the bicarbonate in oven..
Ill try again when leaf is available.

Cotton boll is easy to be had here, I wonder if made into flour it could make a safe snus as it is aircurred?

                    Great post Squeezy

Just need to add that icetool might be very expensive for some people and if you go to the pharmacy to get a small syringe, you get it much cheaper.. I paid 0.50 eurocent for mine and I've had it to fill up my portion bags since the eurocup

tattoer: I've never liked the General myself, it's too intense on the aroma for me.. I'm more of a ettan guy.. Are you thinking copenhagen dipping tobacco? Or snus? From what I know, snus is much healthier..

Edit: Of course I forgot about how you use the syringe!

cut the tip off so it looks like a small icetool, sometimes it will stick to the bags, but if you heat it a little and round it off with a lighter it should be easier to do it..

Place the plastic tip in boiling water and round it off with a spoon...

To bad that portion material can't be sourced out in rolls of sheets.
Obviously it can be, I wish the common man could purchase some, the material is used for other thing I just don't know what....
                      Any ideas??

There was a company here in the UK selling whole massive rolls of the material for about £20 - like 50m x 1m or something. I got the guy to send me a sample to see if it did heat seal - but it didn't unfortunately.

Other than that there's heat sealing tea-bags which are the right material but too big ... like these

I have been using lipton tea bags to roll my own portions. Just cut off the top, dump the tea, and after a little more work you have a nice flat piece of portion like paper that I can get 8 portions out of. Lipton works best as it is cheap and they don't use the type of tea bags that are sealed on all sides. There is just one staple that holds it together.

In the past toque was looking for a way to make sealable portion bags as they where trying to market loose snus. I haven't heard anything more on what progress they are making on the snus or the bags.

Do you heat seal them? Or roll and fold?
