REVIEW - Jakobssons Nicotine Free (experiment)

Well - I said I'd put something down here when I'd tried it and they came today. I got both the classic and ice-fruit flavours from Northerner.

    Packaging
The same as Jakobssons - but with a slightly yucky green colour as the main background instead of black. Nice ash-tray compass design on top.

    Pouches
They're definitely whites - and a bit fluffier than the standard Jakobssons - they look a bit like little pillows and have slightly more rubbery bounce than the tobacco ones.

    Flavour
I tried the classic first because I knew it would be hard to come close to the subtle flavours of the regular classic without the tobacco component. Lo and behold - it's completely different. Tastes kind of like a savoury carrot cake (carrot is one of the ingredients along with green tea) - but it's not unpleasant at all. Quite spicy and the maple flavour works well with the carrotyness. Obviously there is no burn or kick with these and I have to say it felt a little like the not-unpleasant but not-doing-anything sensation of smoking a Honeyrose herbal cigarette.

Then I tried the ice-fruit. I'm a fan of the original ice-fruit and love the menthol cool lip burn along with a blackcurranty fruitiness. Here the tobacco free version is likely to be useful for people wanting to cut down on the chain-snusing. It tastes almost identical to it's more potent cousin - the juices are somewhat less bitter and obviously there was no kick - but I did forget about it the way I do with a portion and felt pretty satisfied the whole time - and didn't feel the need to whack in 2 Nick&Johnnys to compensate.

    Uses
All in all - I think this is possibly the way forward for people who have given up smoking almost instantly with snus the way I did. I tended to over-compensate for the cigarettes by using a lot of strong snus and large prillas of loose almost constantly. It is very easy to actually increase the nicotine intake and therefore the nicotine addiction with constant snusing while you get used to the habit.

Gotlandsnus have produced a fantastic new product in the regular Jakobssons - and I believe the flavours were developed in a way that would allow both nicotine free and normal tobacco types - and while all are quality products - the ice-fruit is the only one where both have the same flavour.

    Disclaimer
I realise that many here are quite anti-nicotine-free - and can't see the point of paying for something that is basically abstinence which should be free! Obviously if you can comfortably reduce your nicotine intake from a high level to a more healthy level by just snusing less then that's great. Similarly if you don't want to decrease your snus use - and it's not harming you then that's great too. Snus is one of the healthiest ways of taking natural nicotine - and just by switching from cigarettes all the literature says that you're cutting down something like 98% of the risk anyway ... this is just a possibilty for people who are very addicted to the act of taking snus - but don't need all that nicotine!

Well, I'm glad SOMEONE tried it. Nice review and thank you.

As much as I might scoff at it all, and have zero desire to reduce my nicotine as it really is medicinal for me (as I have explained in other posts), I have to say this. I quit snus for about a month last year as the woman I was dating had a bad heart condition, so if I wanted to kiss her, I had to be nicotine free. It was hard, but doable. But the one thing I noticed was that I really missed just having a snus in. Similar but different than missing cigarettes when I have quit those before.

So should I ever have a need to quit again. And it WON'T happen but I am just saying, having the nicotine versions available would probably be a big help.

Interesting, very thorough review there which I appreciate.

I can also appreciate the need that some might have to reduce their intake, but like sagedil I also use nicotine in a medicinal way. I often don't notice the nicotine on its way in, but I definitely miss it when I don't have it.
