The fuel pump crapped out for her, but that's not too bad considering. I'd never owned a Ford before that, maybe they are crappy and I got lucky, but I certainly got my moneys worth.
My parents used to have an older taurus as well. I believe it was a 98? That things ran like a dream from what i can remember. It finally crapped out on my sister while she was in the middle of the country....although i suspect something other than just getting old happened to it....my dad sold it for 200 bucks to the local POS car collector and called it a good run.

My taurus has just been a shitstorm of things going wrong. As soon as you get the gasket fixed the AC starts making some high pitched whistling noise...you get that fixed and suddenly the wiper fluid line rips in half. On top of randomly just not starting on the first try during high heat/ low cold days.

You can't find an American made car that's quality built for under....say, $25k? I looked at chevys and a few others 2 years ago and there were plenty to choose from. $32K for a Kia? Kill me now. When I drove the Kias and Hyundais they were nice cars but, come on, they shouldn't be the same cost or more than an auto that's well known for being quality built. I expect a Honda or Toyota to be a bit more than other comparable cars because they ARE better built.....but not the Kias or Hyundais.

sorry for the mini rant but apparently I'm getting too dam old and I am not adjusting to the new economics very well. Some things have gone down in price while others never stop costing more and more.

wow that's crazy. So car prices went up considerably in the last 2 years. Lord it never stops. Then I guess 30K isn't so much for the Kia or Hyundai. Man, they have us by the nutsack.

I'm driving an 01 jeep Cherokee larado with 78k miles on it and an 2000 astrovan [cargo van] with 67k miles on it. I often think about getting a new car but I just can't justify spending a ton of cash for the privilege of getting my ass around anymore. So I keep what I have and take care of them. Both are great vehicles and still look really good. I have someone wax them quite often and I keep them serviced. I don't mind driving an older vehicle but I do mind spending more than a house used to cost just to buy a new car. Lord I can't believe how much they are now. My plan is to pass away before I need to buy another new car.

and I'm quite serious about my plan. I don't ever want to buy a new car. I do plan on selling the MG Midget and the astro van after we move and I won't need 3 cars. I'll keep the Jeep and I'd like to get an older 1975ish Mercedes SL 450 to tool around in. The MG is cool but I'd like a bit more luxury.

There is no way I would pay 30k for a car. I bought the Hyundai for 15k but it had 28000 miles on it. You should consider PP's car. If you dont know anything about fixing cars buying a British sports car is a great way to learn. We will be calling you the click and clack of Snuson in no time.

I have no interest in figuring out how to fix cars. the 30k was for the premium package, lx package, touring package. A standard base model with no fancy ventilated seats and stuff has an msrp of 24. I got the dude down to just over 27 for it, about 1000 below invoice. Now I can say ok you offered 27. I want a base model...so strip 3200 for the touring package 1600 for the premium and maybe i'll still take the lx package.

The Taurus is in a different car class than the old model. But yes prices rise. Still I got in the car I mentioned for right around 16k.

The taurus definitely looks like a much nicer car. I know the limited is going to be the most expensive so a base model would probably be around 30 but i doubt i could trust a taurus again. Hell the fact this dealership isnt charging me for them to take this thing off my hands is nothing short of a miracle. All around I want either a 13 optima with some nice features or the 14 sorento with just your basic model. Both msrp at a little over 24. I think if i go in and tell them im looking to pay 20 after rebates tax/title/reg and trade in we can definitely get me the car i want.

Don't know why you couldn't. Sounds like the one you have us still going but needs work like any other car. On top of that the newer Taurus is a completely different car in every way. I like Ford, hey they didn't take bailout money so for starters they are good in my book if I was in the market for an American car...

I could, but there is NO way I would pay 30 grand either, jusr the principle of it, I guess I'm too old and having a new car when I already have a reliable one isn't that important to me anymore.

Some friends bought a 13 Hyundai Azera (and it is really nice) but they paid just over 30. The payments have to be over $500 month for 6 years. I'll keep my old vehicles, and keep them clean and maintained and have no payments.

I have a simple rule if I am going to have a car payment. No car payment should be more than 1/3 of what my mortgage is. I consider that a reasonable ratio.

I have rent for my apt payed up until june of next year and thats with internet/cable/electric etc included. My real only other expense is grocies and then tuition/books coming up soon and gas. If i get this car for 20k or less I plan on putting down atleast 2500 and then probably have a 5 year loan on the rest but i plan on having it payed down to less than 8k by the time july rolls around next year.

Huh....what? Ok..... I guess I skipped that part, but the barrels part was too obvious. Old van, dark glass, old fart covered in parrot poop, slowly cruising the running trail, classic. Happy hunting.

sounds like a good rule of thumb. Put in to practice there is no new car I could buy.
